Soil erosion, is it a problem across the UK??

I was reading the farmers weekly recently and there was an artical about soil quality and erosion. Obviously its essential to maintain the quality of our soils which is of course linked into how likely soil loss is to occur and obviously there are regions in the UK where it does occur. But is it really as wide spread as they say it is? On the heavy land around us its never something I had really considered but do people think it is a big problem that we should be more aware of? Or is it merely of a regional problem?

I think it's more to do with water framework directive, water quality issues. You don't often see major soil erosion taking place but water running down hill in a tramline will carry some soil particles with it and as such is classified as soil erosion. Muddy water has soil in it and if it's in a ditch or river and moving it is 'soil erosion'.

I think that some people have a tendency to play at God. There are three types of rock; igneous, metamorphic, and the name is a clue, sedimentary. It has been going on since before dinosaurs walked the earth. Obviously as a farmer you would be foolish to ignore it, because the top soil is what you paid for at £10,000 /acre, and to watch it disappear downstream must be a bit upsetting.
