I was reading this thread thinking about how to go about liming my apple orchards.
Choice was either with a wagtail and just try my best or a trailer and shovel it off.

How much room is there between the trees?

2.5-3t per acre Max.

Retest in a years time. Some areas may need more, some may be better.

Use ONLY best quality ground lime, not screened lime.

Milled lime has the best NV
Lot of cheaper lime products but it’s cheap for a reason.

Tested our ground ourselves , bought the lime straight out of a local quarry , spread by a local contractor , cost £20-50p a ton spread.

What is the pH? Fruit prefers mildly acid.

Be aware that lime takes years to alter on pH at tree root depth. If issues seen consider iron folia r feed.

Grave error not to correct orchard pH (and P & K) before planting.

It was. 320ac all between pH 5.1 and 5.4.

My lime man even gave me a bottle of scotch the first year I was here.

we had the same back in 1968, ph over 230 acres mostly 5.2- 5.7. cost a lot of money over 5yrs.

20 miles at a guess , good spec not dust , could have had that for a lot less.

In one orchard the rows are silly wide. That thing of yours would fit but wouldn’t turn at the ends.
Done it before with a wagtail on the 35, might not be ideal but I’ll manage.
The orchard is quite old (20) so can’t wind the clock back, apple roots aren’t mega deep anyway.

It may not be all about pH.

When liming you add a big dose of calcium which can benefit fruit crops.

As always though, test first.

Looking to boost the calcium to hopefully help storage quality. It’s not the complete answer but will help a bit.

Granulated lime will increase the Calcium level, and be easy to spread, it just doesn’t do much for pH.

Foliage calcium is the answer really. Either calcium chloride or nitrate.

As I’ve always said, it has its place.

If you put prilled lime on it will do as much neutralising as there is product at its neutralising value.

No more,no less.

If is expensive it is just an expensive way of doing it,however if you put enough on it will be as effective as bulk.
