Any idea in the costs involved to get it operational ?
Depends if you intend to do some of the work yourself. Typically farmers are quite capable of putting in the groundworks of pipelines etc which is the major cost of any project. For a self build 20k would get you on the hydro ladder but expect to pay a minimum 50k for professionally installed system. Really is how long is a piece of string until you have an accurate indication of flow of the stream over the full year. ie not worth putting in a 2kw system due to summer flow when in winter it will easily do 20kw unless you know your energy demand will never exceed 2kw.

Ah okay, the western power quote of £9000 is starting to look cheaper now !

Your not comparing like for like. the 9k is just a connection charge you still have to pay for electric used whereas the 20k includes free electric or even an income from electric sold.
Yes i realise that but ultimately you still have to find the money to pay for it, and i would imagine like most renewable energy systems there is a lifespan to all of it plus maintenance costs involved

Yes there is a life span but it wont be in your life time. Some hydro systems are still fully functional after 150 years. Maintenance would be keeping the inlet trash collectors clean.
