I am looking at solar to try and reduce my electric bills, have had 1 quote so far £17000 for a 22kw system fully fitted and will generate over 20000 kwh over a year would this sound about right, we are in south west Scotland and the panels are going on agri shed roof south facing 9 deg pitch and 400 meter run to the fuse box any advise would be greatly appreciated and trust worthy companies to get a quote off . thank you

That sounds a good price, what are you going to use the power for? Remember the production curve is very heavily weighted towards the summer months and between the hours of 10am and 2pm.
This can be evened out a lot, by placing the panels East West but you will lose 10-15% of production. However in many instances it will give you a better chance of using the power

Your roof pitch being very low will accentuate production towards the summer months too.

But are you going to get a return on your £17k. Used to be good when FIT was 12p a unit.
Not sure how the sums work now
You prediced yield looks about right. Our 30 kw produces 28000 kw / year

Panel prices and increased efficiencies seem to be bringing solar back on the radar again, Im looking at getting 100kw, no fits , 9/10year payback including a major transformer upgrade.
So in reality its funding the transformer upgrade rather than making huge profits. Finance with no deposit makes it cashflow friendly. tax efficiencies will help too.

I wonder if we might see a higher rate of FIT returning in the near future, Another power problem like Friday`s might concentrate HMG`s mind.. The cheapest way they have to increase generation capacity is with a FIT type scheme

you need to ask them what size of cable they intend to install feeding the array, inverters require a low volt drop so large cable will be required to get the volt drop below 3%

Always best to feed the DC as far back as you can, the panels produce a regular amperage but voltage goes up and down. The carrying capacity of a cable is the amperage not the voltage. Some of mine are over 800 volts at midday

I doubt you’ll generate that amount

You at southern Scotland probably get 760 hours at that pitch

22x760 = 16,700kWh

Then there’s your peak usage.

Dairy? When do you milk, 6am 5pm?
Agri, continuous load throughout the day?
Produce, machines run, lunchtime shut down?

Always look at solar 75% usage

16,700x 0.75 = 12,526kWh annually

Electricity cost in ccl and all that other tax?
16p?

12,526 x 0.16 = £2,004 annual saving

17,000 / 2004

8.4 year payback using 75%

Use the same formula for your actual roi

But this is a solid guide

It is important to size your PV system to your electricity consumption as in today’s market the ROI is made from electricity savings as there is no longer a feed in tariff. I am more than happy to look at this for you and I am positive we can beat this price for you
