Solid fuel Aga replacement?

Our AGA is on oil, which was fine when Kero was 15p/l, now its 40-50 it's getting dear.
We now have solar pannels on a barn roof so think we will convert it to electric as fuel is then free during daylight, which is when you mostly use it.
I stopped heating the hot water with it once we had the solar, which reduced fuel use.
Mother said that when it was on solid fuel there was always dust in the kitchen from tipping the coal in and always smelt.

Talked to a rep at a stand at the ploughing championships lately. TheIr conversion electric aga is 15A. When running it uses 3.5kW. He said most houses need it running 7-8 hours. So 8 x 3.5 = 28 units x €0.18 = €5.04 per day = €1,850 per year.
Anthracite approx €1,000 per year and includes hot water.
But electrIcity would be so handy.
They convert your cooker for €2,700 plus other expenses (electrician etc). An as new converted electric aga was about €5,500.

Hi Rob

We had similar decision to make but AGA was oil with 135 boiler. Now have wood pellet boiler for heating and water. It's on RHI payment, without that I'd go with oil and you can resite it so no issue with piping etc. Cooking is a gas range with bottled gas, uses 2 x 48? a year. All controllable and economical. Put 500l in the AGA now without boiler and run it on low fire through winter for extra comfort old times sake. Happy wife, happy life!

AGA's are outdated. If I was having anything solid fuel now I would want it to burn our own wood. Maybe you need a wheat boiler - wood pellets are £300/t!!!

Hope you're all well.

Nick
