Someone’s trying to get into the iCloud account

For the past two days I get a message to either my phone or the iPad telling me someone in Newark is trying to access my iCloud account. I press the “don’t allow” and that seems to be the end of it. Has anyone else had this? Should I do more? I have changed the password

I assume that you are using Two-Factor Authentication as you are getting notifications so that is probably the best you can do at the moment.

You have also changed you password which is the next best thing.

The idea of 2FA is that even if they know your password, they still cannot access, unless you grant it. :)

If you still think there is an issue, lots of info here.

Just a thought the alert messages are definitely from Apple? I have been bombarded with phishing emails, text MSG's the past couple of weeks and some of them are really clever.

Thank you both. I’ve forwarded an “apple” email that came Sunday to the phishing department to check it’s legitimate. It was an email to confirm 2fa had been enabled, this was roughly when I was setting up a refurbished phone which I presume was turned on to it already. We’ll see how it goes. Nothing yet seems to have been messed with and I’ve never set the apple wallet so fingers crossed

Could it have been you but the system is misidentifying your location? I know I have had similar with google challenging some sign in attempts which was me with my device but the locations resolve to a location half the country away, something to do with how the ISP network is set up I think.

If I could crash the party?!

I keep getting notification to update my Apple ID settings. When I enter my password it goes away for a few hours/day and then comes back again.

Any ideas?

I’ve turned the phones location thing back on this afternoon, maybe it will then recognise where I really am as it’s last location recorded could have been Newark

I sometimes get notifications, after adding a device or something, to say that someone tried to access my device or similar with the location up to 150 miles from where I actually am. The important thing is that the system does check and warn the owner that something has been changed and if it wasn't me, to change passwords. Sometimes I can't recall for a while why I got the notification, but there is always a reason.

I get that, on mine it’s because I’ve not given it a credit card to use for payments, so it keeps nagging.

just a thought, have you checked the phone number it’s set for? Settings, phone, my number.

when we’ve moved provider it has been necessary to manually update the number the phone uses. I dont have much experience with them but wonder, if it’s a refurb whether it is remembering some of the previous owners details and theres some conflict between devices somewhere. .

Any chance you might have sold an old device without logging off the account? Login to your iCloud via a browser and have a look at the configured devices. Remove the ones you don't recognise and unlink it from your account. Also worth changing the password to be on the safe side.

Do be wary of emails claiming to be from Apple as there's an increase of such phishing attempts recently.

Might be worth cleaning it all and getting rid of the lot. The value keeps going down everytime Apple releases something new.

On the account issue, try changing the password and see if the errors goes away. If you have used the same email/ password combination on any other website such as email or supermarket or magazine subscription, one of the might have been compromised and ususally the attackers try the same on all available sources. Good that you have 2 Factor enabled or else it might have been a different story. Hope the issue goes away.

It's a common thing that happens every once in a month or several times for that matter, a message appears someone tried to log in, confirm whether it's you are not. You need not worry about it.
