Something for tramlines

Thinking about converting an old 4x4 to a wider track so that it will run in tramlines on wheat or barley up until about May.
Has anyone done similar? Was thinking about a Jimny, HiLux or similar.
I know a VW Transporter is 72" track but too big and 4x4 ones are rare.

Been on the m40 going north between bicester and banbury and see some one spraying with a old land rover

Is 72” still the most common? A couple of drills I demo’d came with 78” track, I only found out the other day when spraying the fields.

Question was never asked by me at the demo and all previous have been 72” so assumed it. Worth checking before you start building in any event.

Not applying, just soil sampling. Get the majority done with quads before crops get too high but there is always some late work. This year we've still got about 6000ac to do and it takes a while to walk.

Good point. We run 72" and 80" for bed and row work on spreaders but had assumed most were still 72".
Sounds like I need to factor in a sliding axle too now

More expense...!

Better that than spending out on something that doesn’t do the job.

Will just be collecting samples for a lab I expect where as we're doing in field tests. Doubt he puts his RTV down tramlines when crop is a foot high though??

I was going to ask him how wide the centres of tracks are as thats what I'm trying to achieve. Our tramline motorbikes have got to many issues now to keep them running.
