chop it to bits then start at ground level its not stuble then :)

All be whinging about chopped straw then!
Laid straw is a pain especially as it gets later in the year and grown in. Can usually bury it in one direction - have to clean it off for’tother

Interesting one!! I had a plot this weekend that in some places had straw 14" tall and some laid, some still had the heads on, course it was damp first thing in the morning but I cleaned some as best I could before I did my split, got into my midwork and it was terrible, I borrowed a rake from next door and raked the remaining unploughed area and dumped it on the headlands (there was too much of it to put in the furrow) it went ok after that. This was at a Qualifier and no one said a word but Fergie skims are no match for 14" tall stubble!!

Had a similar thing in National first time it was at Marden. A third of the plot was diabolical. Had a false rig next to a pond. Ground was unbelievably uneven - lot of standing corn left where they could not get the header down low enough to cut it. Tramlines were 3’ wide and so deep that I had cast 4 or 5 rounds before the plough touched the bottom of them. Got e 2.5 metre length of channel and a rope as thick as my arm both stuck in the plough as I opened up, plus penalty points for late opening just for good measure - and yes you guessed it right, steam ploughs, demonstrators and world style all in the best o’plots!

Aparrently so was a talented youn ploughman who had made it through to the plough off weekend before last. Were going to dock him for his dad helping him set his sticks up. He who should be spoken of in whispers asked if any of the spectators were related to the young lad - twice - before his dad owned up and was told that if he ventured on the plot then the young lad who shall remain nameless - would be disqualified.

WrightCart load of tosh if you ask me. Just hope my Phrasing was right on that one!
And then its all the bad folk on here as have to run the gauntlet of being accused of putting young ones off! :(:(:(

well a local man won a local match at penrith, fortnight ago, never gripped the rippling away, not picked any stones or straw off the plot at all, he even did not put any poles up on the plot, yet results where given out and in the paper that he won,
now that takes some beating, as he was ploughing 250 mile away in Herefordshire on the same day,
will this be a record ? Or has someone else done this

Sop should take a leaf out of Scottish ploughing match, all plough persons under 26 are allowed 1 person to help them all the time, also have parallel plots for reversible ploughs to encourage youngsters to go to the national. (y)(y)(y)

Apparently? Hearsay then. But then again you like what you hear so it's the whole truth and nothing but the truth!

I was once told, only hearsay of course, that the SOP did not turn young farmers away from ploughing in the nationals. I think the blokes name was King Canute or something similar. Could have been brother of Dougout Canoe.

Straight from the Horses mouth - aparrently the vehicle with flahing beacon was parked offensively close to the young guy.
Could have been a right Battelle with the steward as well.
Just for your information gNasher, his dad has no axe to grind and no reason whatsoever to lie to me. Of Allmen one of the vintage class also had a go at both of them. Could be the difference betwixt me n’ thee gNasher is that I have and ear to the ground whilst you have your head in the clouds.
Might just have escaped your notice but the aforementioned Devonian has been suspect on several occasions in the past. In one such instance he drove - not once - but twice, down the middle of Don Woodhouses plot.

Scuse me for seemingly being tactless gNasher. According to Winston Churchill, the definition of tact is being able to tell somebody to go to hell in such a way that they might enjoy the journey. Personally speaking it bothers me not one jot how you get there! :D

I suppose the easiest way would be to hitch a ride with you. Your ear would be close to the ground when your head is buried in the sand.

Perhaps if the young ploughman said that his dad was his coach and he was intending to qualify for a world match he may well have been excused. I would love to hear how the SOP would respond to that..

The young lad, and indeed everybody should carry a rule book on the tractor, and asked B Ball to point out the relevant rule! That would be hard as it is stated that assistance can be given to set and remove poles The "devonion"( I believe him to be Cornish, but cant be sure) has form. Last year, when complaints were made to him, his response was" But that man is a friend" and nothing was done. I think he was wrong on two counts, he has no friends that I know of down here!
