Certainly wouldn’t want any NZ genetics in whatever you buy in. They don’t seem to have that will to milk if you pour the feed to them and have a lot of poor feet and udders. That’s my experience anyway.

We’re in the hands of the ministry and lot will depend on Jan 4th skin test.
If it’s a green light, we good to go on HoJos... putting out feelers and it would appear stock is available

What is the issue with Jerseys ?

Nothing. We are playing with ideas but at the moment jerseys heifers in to our yard from Denmark are north of £1500 due to Russian buyers and the quality isn’t what it was. Having said that, if we can source the right animals at the right price, we will buy jerseys
Will be retaining a core milking jersey herd of 500-600 pedigrees in any case even if we go down HoJo route

You will regret trying to save 200 quid an animal for the next 10 years.

Dang me breeches but all sorted as of today ...............

Didn't take too long to reject thought of crosses as whilst the initial animal might do ok in an intensive system, the breeding would be too challenging to keep the yields/solids up there.

Then looked very carefully at starting an alternative herd of Danish Reds but they would need to average at least 9000 litres plus to match our Jerseys and there is no price differential between the two breeds because of the Russians & Turks

Will have 4 loads of Jersey heifers landing within next 4 weeks all muttering "tak, tak" as they come down the ramp.

Probably knew that was where we would end up but it is all very interesting exploring the options and running the numbers
