Spanish lorry strike.

Told at market this morning spanish haulage industry is striking 20th December to & including 22nd December. That is the bosses are striking because of high costs no trucks moving.

I would have thought most produce here for Xmas, but a problem perhaps.

Talking to one of my customers yesterday and he told me about it. He runs a greengrocers and reckons Boxing Day turkey salads are not going to happen.

No foreign glasshouse herbs / peppers next week into a local herb grower / retailer.

Plenty of good local grown veg - brassicas and roots.

If there weren't millions of people in this country that do want it they wouldn't be on strike would they.
No salad available will be a complete disaster for an enormous amount of households and caterers, a ham and turnip sandwich is not going to cut it.

They are running out of water to grow the crops, and when you see sight of the pesticide residues report for some of the produce, you would probably wouldn't want to eat it.

Would be very interesting to see what the biological and fecal loading is on some of these products ? Would probably scare the sh1t out of consumers !

I have been told how bad working conditions and sanitary facilities are for these workers by an English guy who worked over in Spain as a crop manager for 11 years.

and I believe employees are treated like modern day slaves, but people would rather make a fuss about someone dead hundreds of years (so obviously it makes no difference to them) and topple a statue, than do something to stop present day mis treatment of people and interfere with their own eating habits.

Years ago, I used to haul a lot of coppice timber to the Bowaters pulp mill near Sittingbourne.
The stench from the rotten, recycled water used in the process of pulping was more and more horrendous, the closer to the factory I got.
All I can taste in continental (Spanish) grown salad, whenever I'm exposed to it, is the stench I experienced back then.
Revolting crap. I won't eat it.

Vans ? You can get a lot of lettuce, cu's and peppers in the back of a Mercedes sprinter van.

Or tractor and trailer ? JCB fast trac ?

Plenty of options.

Plenty of salad of far better quality from elsewhere in the world.

Besides which. A bit of shredded raw cabbage, swede, turnip etc will put a good bit of crunch and fire into a turkey sarnie.
Nothing wrong with some pickles on the plate either.
