So as your probably all aware they've stopped making spectam. We used it only as a TREATMENT for watery mouth as & when needed. I'm slightly worried what we're going to use instead when we have the odd lamb with wet mouth.. yes we make sure they all have colostrum, lime & clean the lambing pens ets etc so please no messages about all the preventative stuff as we've got that pretty much covered.... What are folks going to do with lambs with watery mouth......??

Built a poly tunnel this year, gone from 30-40 cases of watery mouth a year too 2 🤷🏻‍♂️ Haven’t cleaned any pens out between sheep and haven’t used like apart from when I first fetched sheep in

Same as ever ~ making sure that ewes yield plenty of high quality colostrum, keeping a bank of colostrum in 100 ml, and 50ml portions ready for deployment when that isn't the case. Keep the place clean, and the bedding as dry as possible.

Back to antibiotic injection of any cases. Years ago, a drench of diluted sulphamezathine would often cure watery mouth. There's nothing in the present armoury that can do that.

are they sopping making it forever or is it just short for now?
Some are saying its stopped for ever but others are saying its just a short term issue with production and may be made again next year!

Given that they have been trying to stop farmers using it the last 2/3 years i suspect the first option is the most likely!

Seems to be the plan to stop UK farmers using meds whilst letting in imports of meat from around the world that use meds that have long been banned in the UK and/ or are used as growth promoters and not as they were intended to so do which is to treat sick animals.

As I recall ~(and i gave up lambing indoors decades ago for my sanity)...
it's just a bit of dirty wool the lambs gets hold off, or a dirty teat.
doesn't matter how much milk mum has got........whatever goes down his gullet first is critical....and if it's got the bug in/on it, you're in trouble.

I knew a family of pretty hard core stock farmers who gave each lamb 1ml of veg oil at birth -before the days of spectam.
Try it!

I did manage to save a few, but the time was hard to find, and it was always hit and miss. (glucose and water until no more milk is coming through)

Our vets news letter gives a choice of three antibiotics, alamycin LA , trymox LA or diatrim. They recommend testing samples to see which one is most effective on your farm and to check for any ab resistance

That's why we aim to keep the lambing areas and mothering up pens dry, and well bedded up. Ewe's udder conformation matters, too. Lambs can ignore clean, dry, woolly tufts when the udder is a good shape.

I used to give lambs a small dose of olive oil in with tubed colostrum if I thought they were at risk of watery mouth ~ which was anything which needed tubing. Realised the oil was only needed when a weak lamb had bunged up, so that's when it's administered nowadays, along with a gentle enema.
