Spinal Stenosis

Can’t say I’m a fan of Naproxene as it can cause stomach ulcers. My specialist put me on Izalgi which is Opium/Paraceramol. However the thing that puts me right is a spinal injection under x-ray each year ( Spinal stenosis, spinal arthritis and generally shot L3, L4, L5 after years of hand balling 1cwt bags of seed and fert.) Surgery not advised.

@Oliveau 's duplicate thread has reminded me to update on my situation. Almost two years after first seeing my GP about my back problems, I am about to go into hospital for a Spinal Decompression. It should have happened last week, but it got postponed by the hospital. I have been just about carrying on working, with lots of assistance and maximum doses of Tramadol and Gabapentin, which control the pain, but make life difficult in other ways, both for me and those around me. I hope to be able to update this thread again before too long ,as to whether surgery has been good for me ,or not. But one thing is for certain and that is that carrying on as I have been is definitely no longer an option :(.

Yes, had surgery 15 yrs ago. I tried everything to sort it, normally the Osteopath would sort things out but this was something else! Had perscription pain killers but the Co Codamol made me feel so rubbish I would manage the pain by walking or standing until the pain was unbearable ( 2 -3 mins) then sitting to relieve it. Took Amylltriptylin too. Had an MRI which diagnosed it and was referred to a Neurosurgeon at a Spire private hospital in Portsmouth who did it on the NHS. The relief was instant although a very uncomfortable ride back to Cornwall!! Played recovery by the book and haven't had any problems since. Pain is very waring and I didn't realise how grey I looked until after the op.

Good luck with the Op, do exactly what you're told afterwards! No point going through all that to bugger it up.

To update on this thread I had a bilateral micro-discectomy procedure at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham just over two weeks ago and I am now in recovery, at home, having been in hospital for three days following the three hour operation. So far,it is going very well, indeed and I am very grateful for the good wishes and encouragement from the previous respondents of this thread, particularly @Overby ,who I now realise that I had omitted to thank previously. I am doing physio exercises ,two or three times per day, but I am also being very careful not to overdo things. I went outside for the first time yesterday, to attend an appointment at the local GP surgery to assess my scar, which they were happy enough to leave uncovered. I have been able to reduce my Gabapentin from 2700mg/day down to 300mg/day and I hope to be off it altogether, soon. I am managing my pain relief with Ibuprofen plus Omeprezole as a stomach protector. I still have a long recovery ahead, and the Consultant Surgeon told me, pre-operatively that it could well be a year to eighteen months before I am fully recovered. But, I am almost pain free and when I think back to the absolute mess that I was in before the operation, then that is a fabulous thing! Thanks Guys.

Thats brilliant, hopefully you will be relatively pain free very soon. Take it easy, no point risking taking a backward step. It wasn’t until after my surgery did I realise how grey I had looked, pain is exhausting! Good luck.
