I need a small spot welder to do jobs such as fixing carbon bushes etc on starter motors and alternators. Low power two pronged ones are available on ebay, but think tyey are only good for building rechargable battery packs. The only other thing I can find suitable ,is the home made ones ,built from a transformer from an old microwave, with the secondary coil replaced with 2 or three turns of welding cable! What is tye corect machine for the job? Thanks

Can't help you but it sounds interesting.
Thought it was something for car bodywork you are after. Never considered a spot welder for that sort of jobs.

Thanks Ukjay, the big auto repair spot welders would probably be too cumbersome and incinerate what i want to do. Wasnt thinking of spending a lot of money ,for something used occasionally. Feel a bodge coming on :scratchhead:

Not the sort of thing I would feel safe doing / using.

Guess if the transformer was covered? It would look safer, but whats the difference between this spot welder and an eletric stick welder? 50 or 80 volts on the output circuit. Exactly the same principal, or even a battery charger? With a voltage of around 2 volts, wont go far! Just have to make sure the transformer outer shell is earthed. And a circuit protector in the line.

Control will be your biggest problem, so the leads to the brushes don't disappear with the heat. But still be good enough to weld the wires together. If it was a body panel, control wouldn't be so critical.

Type of transformer, the donor will need room for the large secondary wires
