Sprayed this field off , was ploughed 4 years ago but didn’t turn out how I hoped, going to direct drill with kale/rape hybrid in the next few days just thinking does it need topping ??my topper is out of action so can’t do it myself and want to get the job over and done with, not much grass there its just run to head. Thanks in advance

If the drill will flow through the stuff that is stood there I would leave it alone, if not then you may need to top, although sometimes the toppings cause more grief than leaving the stuff standing.

I agree. If the drill can cope with long grass then this will be ideal as it will protect the young brassicas when they come through. Topping would be a bad idea. We've struggled with brassicas this season so I wish you all the best.
All the kale I got sowed early I’ve resowed last week :(

I’ve redrilled most of my swedes with Massif turnips now, thanks to slugs & flea beetle. Crazy numbers of grey slugs about, even striping leaves in Spring Barley that’s in ear in a couple of patches alongside (redrilled yet again) ‘wild bird seed’ strips for Glastir.
I am only allowed to drill with slug pellets on those strips, not apply an6on top. What it’s meant is. That i’ve Actually applied more pellets than if i’d Been allowed to treat it properly & effectively, and the barley emerging now will not be producing much seed for any birds this winter. Mustard sown with it has also been lost to flea beetle, again. Feckwits.

Interesting about the slugs, a fresh cut silage field was covered in crows yesterday, maybe that’s what the were after.

I had a dig around with a pen knife, looking for some failed Barley seed in those bird seed strips. I was amazed by the numbers of grey slugs I found in the top couple of inches. Turnip & OSR growers will have fun in the Autumn.
