Spraying down with oil

I often hear of people spraying down their machinery with oil before putting it away, to protect from rust. What is the best thing to use for this, both the oil and the sprayer?

used oil is the best

Use a mix of diesel and hydraulic oil here.

Proprietary ‘agri wax’ type products have jumped up in price, to the point of being pricing themselves out. Plus one for clean engine oil and diesel or kero.

Used oil is carcinogenic both to touch and breathe in. Plus it makes everything black and dirty to touch and to look at!

used oil is the best

Why used?

I saw a machine sprayed with used/waste oil and it made it look terrible. Still protected it I suppose.

Used back axle/transmission oil is what I use. Have tried new oil if no used left and it doesn't spray well which probably shows that the additives that make it cling have been minced in the used stuff.
Used engine oil is beastly stuff and certainly wouldn't be spraying that.

Or if you have plenty a Schutz (for putting on the under body protection) gun will fire it on from a distance.

A thin layer of oil is (fairly) waterproof and protects from rust and moisture damage to paint

diesel evaporates used oil has some lovely chemicals in it that actually get right into the metal and any paint flakes does a brilliant job over wintry washes off when its time to use it ascetics are one mans view
