spreading lime - pluming over houses

Today weve had contractors here spreading lime. The one field is over by the town. The lime is pluming and it is a tad windy so moving towards the homes. One place is kicking off stating its gone all over their property and its dangerous and corrosive. Phoning environmental health to complain. He's nearly finished now but lack of rain etc the lime is going to be sitting on property roof, vehicles and land.

To defuse any further kicking off where do we stand on this? Obv he should of informed the residents but we didnt realise it would blow so much.

Wont be doing this again soon. But could organise some chicken poo if the moaning goes on.

What is the etiquette for this?

Be very very careful , crushed limestone on car paintwork .... you could be into thousands in claims. This is however what insurance is for

Just do what shaggy said.

It wasn't me. Prove it came from your field.

It drifts about with no wind if its fine lime. @Treg could explain the benefits.

Don't apologise or do anything that could in any way be taken as accepting liability.

You have certainly done nothing wrong. If neighbours are unhappy, it's nothing to do with you, you paid someone to apply lime to your fields, not to peoples houses.

There is a very similar thread about digestate- I really struggle to understand why farmers feel the need to apologise for doing perfectly normal acts of farming. Do Tesco go round apologising for shopping trolleys abandoned everywhere?Or McDonalds go round giving bottles of wine to people who find a fast food wrapper in their garden?

Next thing you know, farmers will apologise for milk tankers using the roads and cattle lowing.

Technically and I’m playing devils advocate. But if your neighbour flytipped his stuff from the big house on your land what would you say? If a building site let lime dust blow all over people’s property would it be right? Just because it’s been happening for years doesn’t make it right.
