Spring barley advice

For a few years we have sprayed 50 kg of liquid N on with the pre drilling glyphosate, balance at peri em. Seems to work well although most N was high this year, as mentioned above by @ajd, this was not a good year to experiment.

Our s barley usually follows beet, which has had muck & potash in generous amounts, negating the need for much fresh p&k application.
I usually put all the N in as liquid with the pre em herbicide, straight after drilling.

2/3rds of N as Urea in the seedbed is no problem even in a dry spring like ‘18 or ‘20
I have had my best SB results this year and in ‘18 had farm av yields with malting
I follow up with 26N 35S when in the row

You soon see the difference between fert down the spout or not when a fertiliser spout has blocked! 🙄

Contractor did a ‘trial’ for us in one 5ac field this year... half of it with 2.5cwt of 16-16-16 down the spout and half without.
This photo was taken about 3 weeks after it was top dressed with 25 units N, but the stuff without the fert down the spout was rubbish right through till it was combined.

We are moving to using a urea sulphur compound for everything now 38-0-0-19. Thinking of spinning half on a week before drilling and half down the spout total 100kgs N. This is if we drill mid march. If it was in February like we did a couple years ago I would spin the reminder on after. Thoughts?

Yes, that’s what I would do for a Feb drilling, 2nd to 3rd week of March is typical here

Visually it shows the benefit of the soil fert but it’s not a fair trial to take to yield as the areas missing the drilled fert received much less total N and P and K.

I know, would have needed a 2 meter fert spinner to complete the trial!

For a fair trial I would spin some ontop with fert spreader ontop of ploughing. Then do other bit of field through drill.

Would show benefits of putting it close to seed.

On my drill seed and fert goes down seperate pipes. Some say this isn't as good. Others say it roots better as roots have to travel to find nutrients.

I don't know.

Shows that the 'speed of acquisition' for barley is important!!

As long as it’s beside the seed you won’t see any difference 1or 2 pipes
