Spring barley advice

I’ve got a drill which will drill seed & fert. Should I drill all the fert In one go it’s what I want to do. They are metered separately but do go in the same place slot. Disc drill any thoughts. Probably going 120kg/n/ha solid fert either 34.5 or 24/8/8/8

All our N will be broadcast ahead of the drill if that helps.

Maybe not a good idea to drill that amount of fert into the same slot as the seed?

If I can’t drill it all at the same time I’ve saved nothing,

Guess I Could do a bit of diy with the out let pipe so it’s not in with seed then. How much do / can be put with the seed before meltdown ?

Pre drill application here because we are relatively late drilling

if I was drilling early would wait till latter half of March
120 kg of n is a lot in the row could lead to seed damage
when combined drilling in the distant past 20 10 10 and 60 kg of n or dap

80kg of seed, anywhere between 80 and 100 kg of 20/10/10 is fairly common in the spring with us...

Last season I tried a 36m tramline of 80kg/ha down the spout and left it at that, standard is 40 down spout the 60-80 on asap (liquid).
my theory was that I could use less because it’s placed better and get low nitrogen’s. The yield and nitrogen’s we’re all the same but I don’t think last year is a good example because it didn’t rain.
I did not see any detrimental affect though

I don't know anyone putting it all on in one hit. Advantages to me is giving it some P and N close to seed to aid establishment. Plus it reduces the amount of N you have to put on top dressing.

Personally i would split Straight N if that’s what you use at that rate but if you use the compound It will be fine in the seed bed

I wouldn't put any fertiliser right next to the seed.

I usually put half on seed bed and rest on when you can just see tramlines in the row.

We go about 30n on seed bed with P&K and 90 when you can just see the tramlines.

Back in the day !! ( 70's ) when we were all using Massey 30 drills, common practice was 3cwt of 20 10 10 per acre down the spout. The seed went down the same spout and into the drill made by the disc. Never had any problems. Hope that helps ? ( Spring barley )

Usually place DAP with the seed .... both go down the same tube to the coulter and have never had a problem. I understood that it was potash that could burn the seed in high amounts ( but could most likely be wrong on that). Usually spread the K on top as it’s needed a bit later. Also think that is is less of a problem in wetter climates of Western Europe mixing seed and fert.

Putting urea down the spout would negate any volatilisation
could also use urea prills which are cheaper
