Mecoprop P is the worst for mixing with manganese chelates. If you’re not shovelling it out of the sprayer tank with a spade it will knock your crop sideways. Other hormones (phenoxy acids) include MCPA, 2,4 D, fluroxypyr, dicamba, clopyralid

the problem we have with thinner stands is the barley brackles or the later tillers mature later

thicker crops are more even which then lean over allowing the header to pick them all up as the modern header can follow the ground just above the stones
the best crops I have had are nearly falling over .planted in warm soil end of april grow like stink fertiliser in the seed bed aim for 700 plus heads 100 days drilling to harvest

Ok, i have mn sulphate? Used it last time...with a chem seemed no issue? Havr agro coming this week.

Most weeds are broadleaf and easily killed or suppressed, the winter grass is at end of life, my biggest concern is some phalaris which is impossible to kill.

Crop will grow most likely under more heat than uk crops...so tillering action is always a concern.

I will go in with uan at 5 leaf and at tillering if i can.

Im happy with population, should avg 380.

I will be happy to pull a crop as ive already cut 10t ha of clover wheat silage at 50% dm, plus sheep on tack for 8 weeks.

Due to drought, barley is $400 a tonne and straw $150.

So i might make some money??

Manganese sulphate is what I use too. Be careful about what you mix it with. It will be fine with fungicides and sulphonyl urea herbicides. Try and leave it at least a week between fertiliser and spray applications to recover.

Thats what ill use next year if im doing barley.

How will it yield? Disease?

Ant...

Most watered once, some twice, hope for 5t/ha. Unirrigated will yield bugger all, most of it died.

No disease or treatments as there was not enough rain for disease.

My late sown block after rice which was sown at the end of July did have some Russian wheat aphid damage, so you will need to watch for them.

I think a few things going on here.

1. Mn defeciency, see pic, have chelate to go on at 3 leaf with chem.
2. The seedling is now gone and crop was surviving on energy of seedling, the roots arent big enough to supply the plant.
3. N defeciency, dry and plants to young yp access DAP.
4. Lacking moisture.

Agro says potentiol fert damage, j dont think so, dap sown at 160 on 6" spacings with crossslot. Where rows are tight and wet, plants are in high numbers and nice and green.

Rain due monday nite, will float on 120kg urea. Then fridayish spray weeds and mn on.

Any thoughts on plant pics?

I have yellowing sporadic in field. Mainlg sandier drier parts.

Manganese deficiency usually shows symptoms on the younger leaves though it will kill the older leaves eventually.

Your crop is in a period of rapid growth so is struggling to get everything it needs. H2O deficiency has lots of symptoms! With placed DAP the roots should get the N and P they need but 160 kg/ha won't sustain the barley for long but has given it a very good start. Out of interest, have you tested the soil for pH, P, K and Mg or anything else?

Do you get much rhizoctonia ?

Soil test was done 3 years ago, i need a new set, since growing balansa clover for seed, i havent had to worry to much growing that.

It is generally good for N, lowish p and k, ok for everything else.

I do get rhizo a little, its been clover 2 years in a row, did have wheat this year at a light rate, seed was treated.

Full on wheat crops after 3 million years of grass rizo was very little to zero, eyespot was biggest.

Wheat sown with clover had zero rhizo.

Got 10 to 40mm rain tipped next week,

I really think the transition from the seed energy to rekying on roots in fast growing crop plays a part.

Found out my pale colouring issue i believe. Today its like the paddock was flipped with colours.

Any plants at 1 leaf as poking through soil, green, plants in dry soil some in wet, gone pale, plants that are now well into 3 leaf are now green.

So the early sown half has gone bright green i a day like it had rain and N shot. Anything sown deep and was delayed, gone pale. Plants that were pale on tuesday now green on thursday.

Any thoughts on how grazing arable stubbles between crops impacts rhizo pressures ?

Given ots a roit based disease or fungus, im not sure that grazing would have any affect? Above my pay grade sorry! I just alternate between legume and cereals. A good summer crop of rape woukd be the best at reducing levels, but i think the the Balansa clover as dense as i grow it would be helping alot. When i planted wheat thos year into the clover for grazing it flew, and was healthy all the way long into winter, best ive seen on this block.

It was an old dairy farm covered in weeds when i bought it. Im down yo mainly just winter grass as being an issue.

Cheers Ant
