Morning all !
When’s everyone planning to get their spring barley in the ground ?
What are people’s thoughts on either getting it drilled in good soil conditions early-mid March but while its still cold, or if the rumoured long distance weather forecast is to be believed and we do get a wet late March, have to wait till mid April to be able to travel in the field again?

Drilled some in mid March 2 years ago - rained like buggery for the next week. Crop was written off and cover crop drilled. Ideal timing here is when it is warm and dry even if thats 2nd week in April. We dont run out of moisture, so will go in when it is right, even if I have to bite my nails as everyone else gets theirs in.

Agronomist told me as late as possible, to allow maximum black grass flush.
So late march early April here, drilling into over wintered ploughed land, so will put seed into moisture however deep it is. !

I’ll have a look next week then, I know the trouser dropping purists won’t agree when the BBC weather doesn’t give a night that’s not in the minuses for the next 14 days

If it hadn’t rained Monday and Tuesday here I think l would be at it by now. Saw a couple of bits done by a14 on way to bury st eds on similar land to @marcot s. I think BS were even drilling beet trials .
We have stronger land here but still suffer from drought....

Fertiliser on, fences to check, cattle to kick out, slurry to spread, muck to spread, fertiliser again, plough it, work it, mess with cattle, work it again, mess with cattle then DRILL.
Allowing for various periods of wetness in between - drill about mid april

Edit. And various days spraying in between that lot.

Haven't finished cutting hedges yet :(

We are the same. Using power harrow on light land.

We wont even consider drilling it until at least the second week in April or until the ground is warm enough,
you real need to put it in and its up in five days and never looks back, we drilled some beginning of March a few years back
almost a ton difference in yield to the April drilled and we have drilled as late as first week of May and got 3 tons acre.
Plenty of time yet as i said the ground needs to be warm.
