Spring barley drilled a bit light

SB went in at 145kg/ha due to a 'technical ' issue, any suggestions apart from blowing some more on. It's about 7ha worth. Thanks

I've done this too this year. On about 50 acres... Just going to put a bit of moddus on and early fert

Don't you put fert in the seedbed??

Local agronomist here ( not mine ) is advising that if its a grass ley going into SB and it has had a heavy coating of cattle muck prior to ploughing it will not need any bagged fert!!!! ( or if it does very little ) .... beggars belief to expect 100 units of N from muck alone!!!

How much should be put on as assuming another 2 applications will be made once it's up. It was rolled today but don't know the TGW as the bags are not here.

If the TGW was 40g then you end up with a plant population of around 300plants
If the TGW was 60g then you end up with a plant population of around 200plants

As long as they tiller well and establishment is at these levels I would say both could yield equally well.

Nitrogen inputs depend on so many variables such as soil type, previous crop etc, but I would want to see 40-50kg N/ha on at drilling. This is around about 32-40 Units.

Thanks I'll look at putting some on tomorrow, the ground is clay having previously been long term grass. Feeling a lot more confident now having seen the other posts. I will also try to find out the TGW, it's got me interested now. Thanks.

You'll have to go steady with the total N after long term grass, and the requirement will vary according to how long the grass has been down, how it was utilised (cut/grazed) and how heavy your N applications were to the grass. This information could vary the total requirement by more than 80 units, (100kg N/ha) Did you apply any organic manures to the field. Again this will reduce the requirement. It is possible that it won't need any N at all!!!

Feed, as advised above was going to put 50 KG N prior to it emerging. This drop of rain will probably help.

Cheers. It can't make use fo the fertiliser until it has emerged anyway but it is best to get it on pre em in case the weather holds you up. Mine is malting so it gets 30 kg N + sulphur on the seedbed then the rest as AN as soon as you can see the tramlines.
