Spring Barley herbicide cost with blackgrass

Belt and braces,
1250g/ha Pendimethalin, 120g/ha Flufenacet and 30g/ha Diflufenican = £35/ha
Avadex granules = £40/ha
TOTAL £75/ha

Not applying the Avadex is a big saving, what do others do in blackgrass fields?

I've seen several examples where the herbicides failed to control it so the crop was nearly put in the silage clamp, but wasn't and ended up with hardly any black-grass. Hence there is a considerable contribution from the crop itself but this can be compromised by heavy herbicide input which might check the crop. Delicate balancing act.

You don’t need those herbicides for spring barley. They don’t work when it goes dry and if it rains after the knock the competitiveness of the crop letting more BG in. We have used spring barley to clean up a massive BG problem and have never used them. Who is suggesting you do this?

I’ve put the legal half rate Liberator and the legal half rate Crystal on a bad spring barley field infested with sterile brome. Always did 1/2 t/acre less yield than the others though no visible crop effect and rain after application to activate the herbicide. The higher seed rate and less herbicide would have been a better investment.

I like avadex on spring barley, roll it in, very crop safe, nails your brome and wild oats, avoids splashing out Axial later on and it’s as good as you’re going to get on black grass.
I personally don’t think pendimethlin or half rate flufenacet adds much to bg control in Spring Barley and can really hit the crop if washed in. As said above, you want a vigorous crop above all else.
Bit of DFF for BLWs.

5 years ago I was spending out on the full monty SB pre em, like many people I now do nothing with no ill effects and save £75/ha
Some Foxtrot for wild oats is the only graminicide spend now, soils warm too quickly for spring pre ems to work effectively and the half doses do nothing as stand alone treatments imho

I would probably use avadex if it was a serious blackgrass area. Have used half rate liberator for AMG and broad leaved weeds on occasion, not silly money on it's own. Takes the pressure off for the first pass with fungicide etc as there will be less need to hunt BLWs out.

I haven't put a BG herbicide on any of my spring cereals for the last 2 years. But we are generally drilling after the 20th March.
We have a BG problem in many of these fields which is why they are in spring sown in the first place. 3 years min till spring barley with no herbicide sorts the problem.
