Spring barley in winter barley

Thanks, its feed barley so it is. I was hoping a heavy enough frost would take it out but its still growing. If the field was closer to home I would have tried putting sheep onto it to take it out.

I have this problem too. My rotation involves winter feed barley after spring malting barley. The negatives of this are the disease carryover - I have had to treat with 0.25 litres of Cortez for the net blotch already & the winter barley is a third cereal in the rotation so can be prone to take all. It does spread harvesting & allows a good timely entry into oilseed rape.

There's nothing you can really do about spring barley volunteers in winter barley. Just aim for a feed sample & manage the disease as best as you can. Use stale seedbeds before planting the winter barley.

I can think of worse weeds you can have in a barley crop...

Are sheep not an option? I had 2 fields on WB where the SB had gone down previously, so a few thick patches of volunteers that were swamping the WB. Grazed it out with sheep, and the frost has tickled the SB enough since to be able to see the tramlines again.:)

Save starting another thread.....

Due to the silly 3 crop rule, I'm going to grow winter and spring barley. I presume it's OK to mix together to make up a load ( feed ) ?
Otherwise, I could end up with 2 part loads of each.......

The only cereals I grow are S.Barley and W.Barley, both for feed. One of the reasons for that is to keep things simple, with one heap in the shed and no problems with the odd volunteer plant that might make it.
