Spring barley into stubble turnips

We tried DD for the first time last some to put some turnip/forage rape mix into winter barley stubble, tried two different drills and both seemed to have worked well.

Have been wondering about planting some of the following spring barley into the turnip land with a simtech drill, is there anything I need to watch out for, do etc?

Would you drill at the same time as if ploughed and combi’d or leave till a little longer.

No machinery has been into the turnips only sheep and quad, but the tramlines from the original winter barley are still a little present.

Land is fit on a predominantly livestock farm, 750ft above sea level, medium soil but thin only 6” before clay.

I pretty much always follow turnips with spring barley.

How I approach it very much depends on the winter conditions. This year there’s been no mud to speak of and ground conditions currently are perfect for direct drilling. I will run a low disturbance sub soiler through some areas where there were signs of compaction in the turnips.

I generally follow turnips with Spring Barley too. Although I have a Simtech sitting here, so could DD, I’ve always found shallow cultivation gets it away earlier through warming the soil faster. If the conditions are right (lighter soil?) though I’d be happy to DD.

I’ve actually gone to running over it with a Shortdisc now, then paying a neighbour to drill it with a p/h & combidrill. No advantage to establishment other than it gets drilled a bit earlier while I’m usually busy lambing. A delayed drilling, trying to fit round sheep work, in 2020, was very expensive.
