Spring Barley regrowth

We are going to cut some Planet spring barley today, the moisture was 12.5% yesterday so it’s pretty dry but there is a heck of a lot of regrowth.
We could end up with a lot of Green grains in the tank.
What’s the best thing to do with it?
Put on the floor in a heap and blow with cool air?
Or put it in a bin and let it sweat and then test the moisture to see if it requires drying which we really don’t want to do?

This is the problem everyone around here is having . Ours will need spraying off with roundup , but the big question is when to do it , as a lot of the heads are still very green with some almost ripe .

Just an idle thought - could you use something like podstick with the Roundup to try and stop the ripe heads falling off?

Put roundup on the Planet here 7 days ago, first time I've desiccated a crop in ten years I think, the tramlines were completely green and lots of small green tillers, the rest of the crop was thereabouts fit. Hopefully start cutting it next week.

If you really must cut, then put in a bin with a ventilated floor and blow air through it for a few days.

Floor with air is best I think, let it equalize out a bit and then see what the overall moisture is as to whether it needs drying or not. That's our plan anyway.

I sprayed my springs off last week. Same problem, expecting it to be feed as the secondary growth will give massive variables in the nitrogen.

I’m leaving it. Forecast reasonably settled. Might regret it but might not. Just a gut feeling.

Quality will be a complete lottery I would think in the circumstances.

Same boat here I’m going to just except some heads dropping off and go with the bulk of the field that probably will see a sprayer next week and then except some grains won’t be ready to tin sunshine but that’s more preferable to leaving it longer and loose more already ripe heads
Job would be boring if it was all straightforward

It’s not just the green grains it’s all the rubbish that’s germinated as well in June that’s a pain in the butt.

I was a week too late with the big R. Could have cut this weekend if I'd been on the ball. Forecast rubbish for next week now. Couple of heavy downpours and it'll be on the floor. Every year seems to turn into a salvage operation.

Yep. I always think it needs just that bit longer before spraying it off so by the time I have done it I might as well just have left it. Haven’t sprayed it this year because the decision is almost impossible to get right for me. It’s an easy decision looking at one head at a time but trying to work out when the optimum number of heads have reached threshold across a vary varied field is nigh on impossible.
It will help you generally though in the wetter Wild West so you did right IMO. I’m chancing it here in the dry east.

Just to add to the misery there is a lot of ergot around this year in barley. And I presume there will be in other spring crops. Colour sorters will be working over time.

Greens can be a nightmare as fit grain can be 14% yet 5% green at 40% can equalise with nasty results on grain temp and moisture

bit of heat and lots of air - or roundup and wait neither are particularly cheap or appealing !

I have seen a fair bit about while roguing particularly on those horrible later green tiller head grains in my wheat down tramlines etc. These will have caught no T3 whatsoever. Get the family round the spout picking them off as they slide down the heap. Joy.

I’d spray that, it will take 2 weeks at least anyway to work better trying save the ripe heads in my opinion.
