Spring barley with Austral plus

Going to drill some spring barley after sugar beet. Is it worth having it dressed with Austral plus for wheat bulb fly? Also what do people think of RGT Planet?

Planet is a good variety, easily marketable around here as there's good export demand. Brewing only. Not sensitive to nitrogen so I'm putting 150 kg/ha N on and it's comfortably under 1.85 N.

When are you drilling it? Egg hatch is late January/early Feb so if you're sowing it now it will have run out of protection by then. Does barley suffer from WBF? @Woodlander ?

Yes - both wheat and barley are susceptible to WBF. I've always said that Mid Nov is the earliest that it's worth using Austral plus for WBF control - it gives around 6 weeks protection. The seed treatment is the only chemical option now, so if there is a WBF problem in Jan/Feb you only have cultural options - rolling, early N...

@Laggard - what was the beet crop like - higher risk of WBF if it was gappy, the adults laying eggs on bare soil in July/August.

I'm pretty sure AHDB have come out and said that this will be a low pressure year for WBF

Have grown Planet here for two seasons as a seed crop. Two very different seasons, where I think it performed well under the circumstances.

Hope this helps

Beet crop had good ground coverage. Good to hear WBF pressure is low. Not planning on drilling until March most probably as land quite heavy.

You could sample and assessed the field for WBF. Then you will have a better idea of background risk. But if not sowing until March doubtful crop will be at risk - sowing past the egg hatch period.
