Hi everyone

Just wondered/ trying to make decisions as to what to plant this spring?

What sort of prices have ppl being paying for Spring barley seed feed varieties or Spring oats?

Tbh we are assessing the cost of homegrown feed for our livestock as per buying in.

I think more mixed farmers ought to cost out growing cereals for home use. Use CAAV rates for the operations if you don't know the unit costs - you'll find them in pocketbooks like Nix. I'll bet most would be better off buying in feed and selling the grain, though I can see how farm assurance costs would cause friction.

Buy the barley off a neighbour for £125/t and plant westerwolds or similar yourself?

My point exactly, but “we’ve always grown it”

In our experience much better keeping your own barley, buying straights and mixing your own feed.

We've bought complete blends with barley included before and cattle don't perform as well.

Propino £385/t
Funny I phoned around Monday for Mulika and Propino, one chap quoted me £430/t Propino to which I replied "taking the pee" to which he replied they have been selling it for £450/t!!!!!!! Needles to say I didn't buy from that company!! He then told me no Mulika about, all sold out months ago.
Phoned a small independent and secured 10t of Propino and 9t Mulika at a sensible non leg lifting price

No small consideration would surely be the nice bit of your own straw, especially if off the combine prices discussed on here are borne out in reality..

Fair point. I've no issue with growing cereals on mixed farms, just whether it is cost effective to keep it at home and feed it yourself just to save shipping the grain out then buy it back in as a blended feed. Arable is a good way of using manure to grow your own straw.

My Laureate was £440t. Reason given that quite a lot of seed crops didn't make the germination spec due to harvest conditions so it's short.

Thankfully only needed a few tonnes as decided to home save for the first time in over 20 years on the back of how well it did last year.

Got the same story. Was also told to up seed rates as germination was just below 90%. Naturally I asked for a 10% discount if 10% of the seeds I am buying won't grow.

You can guess the reply!
