Mr Noo, does this small independent firm sell as far away as Cheshire?
No brainer to use Farm saved seed.
Just for fun, costings for FSS Canyon oats:
£158/t = last years 'contract price'.
£70/t 'ish dressed over a gravity separator, SPD 'Beret Gold' iirc.
£37.96/t BSPB royalty
=266/t, + time helping the dressers.
Could argue nearer £250/t, as the oats were surplus to contract tonnage, so should really be open market price.
Stupid question sorry- is it acceptable to do a germination test yourself - (grains on wet blotting paper?) - or do you need to send a sample off?Just remember to do a germination test first.
I'd send a sample off. Your own test won't show vigour. It can still germinate and not continue to grow. The tests labs do grow it on and it takes longer. It's expensive but I always get proper tests done on ours.Stupid question sorry- is it acceptable to do a germination test yourself - (grains on wet blotting paper?) - or do you need to send a sample off?

I would thinks so, some of my Mulika order came from Lincs, the rest still to follow, Propino all in the shed, suspect you'll just pay more for the haulage. To be fair it was nice to deal with someone from a small independent, they seemed genuinely keen to get the business but not overly so, unlike the big companies "take it or leave it" attitude. I will do more business with them for sure.Mr Noo, does this small independent firm sell as far away as Cheshire?
Acorn Arable, it wasn't the cheapest by a few £ but Sam went out of her way to find me some Mulika, unlike who I normally use who said there was none about and hadn't been for over a month!Worth naming them for their good service? Give credit where it’s due.
With the prices they quoted me I dont think they'll be a danger of that, my agronomist says he has some very disgruntled customers but won't go into detail as it's 2nd hand.I like supporting the independent seed suppliers.
My local firm is T. Denne & Son (Ashford, Kent).
They are always competitive on price, can usually source seed at short notice, have local variety trials, grow their seed crops in Kent, have mobile seed dressing trucks and most of all, good, knowledgeable people.
I much prefer to buy from them rather than see the likes of Agrii getting a stranglehold on the seed sector.
Much seed is specific to the region it is growing in, so UK seed are generally varieties that grow well in the UK, rarely would you see a big import of foreign seed. Last years growing and harvest conditions produced a crop with germination vulnerabilities, the yield was still there or there about, but a somewhat stressed crop harvested in poor condition has seen a percentage of seed crop fail.Always wondered how we are producing record crops world wide and surpressing prices and then have no seed...same in oz with osr...
