I grew seed last in the past, like most seed crops by the time you have spent more on C1 seed and additional inputs required to keep them tip-tip the margin was never any better than a commercial crop but with much greater risk

Wild oats are a pretty easy and cheap weed to control these days in most crops
Oats is the only crop I grow for seed these days. I agree wheat and barley really are a waste of time. Oats on the other hand have to have zero wild oats on inspection, and land that can do that is hard to find, and the premiums reflects that.
Grown Canyon the last few years, and find it yields better than Firth in my system.

Growing Canyon and Aspen here, 350 seeds/m2 I find a lower seedrate sown early (for here) compensates and gives a good yield (3t+) also gives increased bushel wt come harvest.

Grown Canyon for 4? years good variety can go flat with too much sh1t and fert but yield increase over Firth compensates most years. Been very clean. Firth is a bombproof starter variety round here. Not sure what the score is on Aspen.

Cheers BB

I sowed firth last year at 250 kg/ha, but lost patience waiting for it to ripen in mid September so it went into silo as wholecrop. Lovely crop though. How much nitrogen usually? I had on 50 units to acre

1.5 cwt acre will be too thick. At tgw of 40 that works out at over 450 seeds m2. Likely to get high screening and increased chance of lodging at that rate.

I'd got for 1.25cwt/acre in your money. That will give you around 385 seeds m2 which will be plenty.

Ok thanks for that says 40 on ticket but 44 written on bag is that about right for tgw on oats ?
