Spring oats seed rate

What do you think? It's time I ordered the seed. When is the best time to sow it? I have a big area of spring barley to sow too, plus some spring beans.

The grower's guide for Canyon suggests 250 - 300 plants/m2 which suggests 275-400 seeds/m2 depending on establishment rates.

The variety I'm looking at is WPB Elyann. No grower's guide available for this that I can find. The crop is going into reasonably kind chalk soils.

We've been growing Canyon for a few years now, for seed so our C1 seed is about £500/t. We usually plant about 90 kg/ha; we don't know the tgw when we order the seed. Usually plant early April before we go spud planting. Used 100 units/ acre N this year and it was too much even with comprehensive PGR programme of CCC and Canopy.
We used to grow under HLS low input regime so we've upped our game and are still learning!

200kgs/ha of canyon here last 2 years - have done well

grown irish style this year - lots of N and proper fungicides and seems to have paid back well

For me the thing with spring oats is putting them on the correct soil types. Anything drought prone is high risk in our southerly location. We had over 1t/ha difference in yield between fields. Same treatment, next door but different soil. We plant at about 350 seeds. I did though reduce an area by 20% seedrate due to undersowing and evidence that lower seed rates lead to higher bushel rates, there was no difference in yield. In terms of N we put about 80kg/n/ha. Plenty for us, never showed an N deficiency and double overlaps went flat. Nigh N rates on oats is very dangerous in my opinion. One thing we learnt this year that applying a BLW herbicide to spring oats caused 1t/ha yield loss. No visible effects seen on oats but combine doesn’t lie. Unless your fields are full of BLW don’t bother with herbicide. This year on our best fields we were touching 8t/ha but on light ground it was about 6.5t/ha.

What was the blw herbicide if an SU I wouldn't be surprised

9-10 stone per acre
@Louis Mc assures me counting seeds and plants is a waste of time

So @Clive what did oats yield

Canyon this year went in at approx. 350seeds here as well, worked at about 135kg/ha, aim to drill 2nd week of march. 110kn/ha N, usually gives us just under 7t/ha,
Near Taunton, lightish soils.

Around 300 seeds here. 120kg n (40 down spout). Only a small amount of PGR so it went flat on overlaps. 2 fungs, no herbicide. There was BG in it but very small. We also sprayed it off prior to harvesting which made an enourmous difference to combining. They did just over 7t/ha over 100ha, our first time growing them so we were pleased. They really seem resilient, didn't mind the drought and poor seedbed.

Did you put any pre-em on?

Undersowing with clover +yellow trefoilwas the best pre em we had for spring oats .. no herbicide used in crop. Glyphosphate to kill the cover crop n that was it...
Did just under 3 ton an acre , where the next door field did about 2.6 it wasn't undersown.

When did you under-sow relative to spring oats drilling date and how? Can it work mixing in with the oats seed?

@Andy Howard?
