Yes, market first thing and got an Omnitill demo sometime but should be around. Very glad no one can see that crop, about the worst failure we've ever had.

Mine would of been same at farm never had as many slugs about, crop came out then slugs took both cotyledons off within a day so pelleted it and been nursing it since the surround crop has failed completely!! ill give you bell when I'm around.

Same here ...sprayed off 17ha out of 70ha..which we have replanted with mustard to try and hold on to some of the N we applied. There are hundreds of acres of spring rape in the area which have failed...no matter what establishment system was applied, my neighbour ploughed all his spring rape area and he gave up on his and sprayed it off in early June:(

2014 crap crop of the year award goes to spring rape.
90 ha planted
35ha sprayed off before mid June
55ha taken to harvest
58tonnes harvested.

Last year 90 ha produced 278 tonnes.

0.625tons/ha (0.25 tons/acre) sounds like a good yield to me...! I doubt if ours will do as well as yours! We planted just short of 80ha and will probably be just harvesting 35ha.. A total disaster the crop just never grew it just sat in the ground turning purple and waiting for the CSFB. Nothing to do with the way it was established as my neighbours did exactly the same and he ploughed and power-harrowed.. Never growing the crop again. Fallow would be a better option as it would cost less and leave the land in a better state for the next crop.

mine is still flowering in places. Pods have formed on all plants, but I think it is going to need some liquid sunshine to help it along

Why is it so variable and unreliable??

It's very prone to any adverse weather conditions. Cold seedbeds, wet seedbeds, any flying pest, pollen beetle really hammer it. The trouble is with all this winter rape about the pests & diseases multiply up then move into the spring rape as the key growth stages happen later. To think that there used to be quite a lot grown before they reduced the IACS payments.

Anyone planning on Spring oilseed rape? Lagonda is a variety that's been mentioned.
What yeild to budget on?
Or forget all stupid thoughts and bang in some more maize to sell?

Take the money you would spend to the local casino, have a good dinner and get completely wrecked then put what you have left on red or black. Two things will happen You will have a good evening and have a 50% chance of making something.

I have grown it 3 times normally after years like this and in everyone I would have been much better following the advice above.

There will certainly be more people trying some this year than last. But I think it is fair to say that it is not a crop people plan to grow normally.

If you do grow it then it does need to be up and away very quickly and don't budget on more than half a tonne and acre.

I suppose the only thing in its favour is that with less winter rape about the problems from pollen beetle may be slightly less.

Not huge differences in varieties, nearly all are hybrids, though you can get Clearfield lines and a Clubroot variety. And at least one conventional variety is available.
