Spring OSR - am I mad?

Only ever grown winter stuff, and not even much of that. Am I mad to think of growing spring OSR, what are the pitfalls of growing it?

First time we grew it, about 1995, we had 25cwt/ac of Starlight, thought it was marvellous.
Grew load more the next year and had 16cwt/ac.
Was difficult to control weeds because few approved chems any good.
May have moved on but above opinions suggest otherwise.

Would a spring OSR direct drilled into sprayed off ground and plastered in manure not be a very profitable crop? Low cost that's for sure.

Tried it once 2 years ago after some failed W OSR. Wasn't going to badly until the pollen beetle hit, couple of sprays during flowering using different insecticides didn't really stop them. Thought it would be over once the plants stopped flowering, bugger me was it! Little sods just started chomping away at the pods as they formed, Agronomist had never seen it nor anyone he asked about it. Yielded about 15t off 30 acres in the end. Put paid to that idea again in the future!

I can't work out why we don't get the yields we used to. Lots of winter osr grown on farms growing spring osr too.

I grew 125 acres in 2013 after a failed winter crop. 0.4 t/ha when heavy rain immediately after the drill and rolls had left the field capped the soil surface. A client's crop did 1.2 t/ha sown on better land 2 weeks earlier. Late Alternaria took its toll too.

I would never recommend growing it again but as a properly sown crop not just a reseed following a failed winter one maybe it has more potential.

Flea beetle and pollen beetle are your main enemies. The rest needs to be simple and cheap to give any chance of a margin

The last time anyone else asked my strategy was take the money you were going to sink in it, pick red or black give the wheel a spin and at least you have a 50% chance of making something and you also won't have the combine out for it in Sept either
