They tilt forward anyway as the forks are in the center of the base, not level with the bottom. Never had set full backwards. Also. If you have soft bales(it happens from time to time) by having the forks at the bottom, you can get the bottom section of the bale and less chance of pulling right through it.

Just a follow up to this. I got around to painting the bale fork. An undercoat of Zinga followed by two top coats.
I thought reflective strips would get rubbed off so I recessed two 50mm circles on each side. I’ll glue circular reflectors into these and they should be flush.

It has functioned very well so far.

I considered what you have suggested before I made it (especially the chance of catching the trailer with the bottom of the frame).
However, I have it made so that when the prongs are midway in the bale (we use 8 x 4 x 3 bales) the bottom of the frame clears the trailer/floor by 4-5 inches.

By having the prongs raised, the frame is tilted forward when unattached and is therefore less likely to fall back on a child etc.

If you put tines in bottom box , it will twist off the box off with 3, 4 big bales

How do you work that out , 🤣🤣 tines in bottom , best way ,and used to make the first 3 ft of up right bit where brackets where welded too , with 120/120:x8 mm so then you can drop 100 square in for extension ,to suit different bales or pull out to use for rounds , never had bottom twist off , suppose it depends who makes it .

Anything can be made strong enough with the correct bracing.

Personally as a big time user AND a manufacturer, the small increase in bracing that may be required is well worth it from a usability point of view.

I have NEVER seem a big time user with spikes anywhere other than at the bottom the fork.

What have I started?? :LOL::LOL:

I find this works really well for me but I wouldn’t be a big time user.
I find that having some frame below the spikes give some support to the bottom bale but importantly it sits very safely when not in use. Virtually no chance of it falling back on a person.

It would be an easy matter to put extra bushes into the bottom rung of box iron if I ever decide to.

I have one with the tines in bottom beam and one with tines 10 “ up , I find the one with tines in bottom better in the field for picking up and loading and the one with tines a bit higher up frame is better for unloading with the frame below the tines it allows you to roll back without the bales giving and leaning forward if that makes sense , As Bob c says there is mute pressure with tines in bottom but this can probably be mitigated with thicker box and some webs snd plates

Forgot about them. All their muck grabs have the tines in the bottom beam though, does that mean they're going to twist off if I pick bales up with them?
no, but when peeps start picking 3 or 4 half tone bales then flat out across the tram lines then customer brings it in to be repaired and we ask how,, Studernt on bale cart

forks have the tin all the way along the bottom
