Ah, yes. Sold to old Bob as 'spalted' for turning. You may sell a small piece that fits in the boot of an Austin Metro/Nissan Micra. In 12 years I never sold anything to anyone other than Bob on the small side that wasn't firewood. Quality timber, yes, 40, 80, 100 tons of firewood at roadside, yes. 1000's of tons of softwood of varying species onwards to Giddings, Kronospan & other mills yes. Oak to the Shipwrights & sometimes framers but spalted only to Bob in his little car. Now I was always happy to do this as it was a pleasure too. Ah, I did sell three 2.4 lengths to Ercol boys in a van in 2010 for £20.00:LOL:

Ercol buy planked & guaranteed quality from Denmark. Their Latimer sawmill was sold to developers twenty + years back. You may be lucky in finding a timber buyer for reasonable stuff but you'll have to find them and unless you are 'known' you'll not get much more than £1 per cubic foot, roadside. I've been out of the game for seven years now but there was never money in small stands unless you do the work yourself or can join forces with someone else locally or know peeps who can 'do' and this usually involves mechanised equipment. Hand-cutting is a rare beast. This was always discussed during RFS walks.
If you have a 1000 tons then you'll get interest. That was the deal normally.

SS

And we're being told that we must plant trees and there will be a living in them.......swapping one commodity for another, all the producers of which get shafted by the international markets.

No thanks.

Try Wessex Woodland management. They will harvest, stack and sell on your behalf. No idea on the ins and outs of the money side but I believe they sell and take a commission so it will be in there interest to maximise value for you.

Looking into getting a 6-7 acre beach wood thinned out, We looked into doing it 8-9 years back but no one was overly interested, as was buying so much abroad at time, and can’t find post with some company’s that buy and deal with wood like this that was put up at time, we have the forestry commission around us but wanted to get a few quotes, web searches haven’t with my wording found any, so wondering if any of you might know of any?
wpuld need who ever to cut and get it out themselves, based in Dorset
Thanks in advance
What size are the trees to be thinned? , rough diameter. Where in Dorset are you? I know one or two might be interested but they are always busy. Sounds like it is just Firewood and there is a lot of Ash about at the moment. PM me if you want a name and number.

Good luck. I've tried to sell lovely straight ash, also yew and cherry before now and never had any interest. Can't even sell hazel to thatchers. It all ends up as firewood and at least there's a decent market for that.
Can't sell straight milling cherry and yew? wow!
Cherry should be easy enough to shift, and you shouldn't have to breathe very loud if you've good yew to sell.
Yew is a very moveable feats, but shake free, sound sawlogs, anything 18" diameter and up, we'd be expecting to pay at least £250/tonne roadside in the westcounty...not difficult to envisage good pieces at double that..

Crikey, there's threads here filled with folk chasing fencing material, and small yew poles make stakes that'll last decades.
Never enough of it locally, but I use the odd bit myself -for devilment- when that fella Bob the turner isn't to be seen.

Try Chantler timber.
If they're interested, get professional help with licence, felling and marketing it.
Do NOT let a merchant run the show.

Sorry, being thick. try Vasterns, Calne.
again, hire pro help with paperwork and marketing/sale...or you'll be comprehensively walked over.
PM me if you need help...I direct you to private forest manager.
DO NOT go to one of the national companies mentioned elsewhere..they'll look after them first, and you not at all.
seems some are owned by the mills to whom they sell.... which hardly bodes well.

An American tree, and I’m not familiar, but from what I can see ont interweb, the wood doesn’t look much different to our native tree.

If your in the know its excellent wood for chair making. A lot finer grain and much stonger than our native beech. Some woodlands where planted for furniture making just wondered if this was one of them.
