How should I go about removing a dead tree in a hedge that's under stewardship. It's mapped so they know about it, the reason for removal is that it's unsafe. Do I need to get permission or is it just a case of recording it / pictures etc?
I had similar. There should be a 'Tree Officer' within your County Council. Ring, ask for a site meeting. He may say remove crown rather than fell it and that's a good thing. No way JFDI OK! Think 'wild-life' habitat.
There were many fully mature Ash trees evenly spaced, once part of a border denoting Common land and Land owned by The Earl. Over my lifetime they have gradually been blown over, fallen over or when near to people, carefully dismantled. Several housed bats of varying species and I have hated to have been responsible for the destruction of this fabulous habitat.

The problem is the sheer bloody cost of crown work. I have several instances where a neighbour householdr complained a tree was unsafe (it wasn't really) and we agreed to cut it down. Tree Officer was called by another neighbour, so I agreed to a site meeting that week. We both agreed a big prune and crown operation would be nice, so I requested a donation or that the Council workmen carry out the task and I would assist them if required. A week later the tree was down.
