pretty sure shooting starlings in England and wales is illegal...I think they might still be on the general licence in Scotland but unsure

Yes it is. I got a friendly visit from plod about 8 years ago after being reported by a neighbour. I wasn't even aware at the time it was illegal to shoot them. Had them roosting in trees in the Garden at dusk, thousands of the little beggars. Mother finally stopped them coming in by going out at dusk as they came in banging a big pan with a spoon to make as much racket as possible. Stopped coming after about 4 days of it.
