They don't have to have sheds but in a lot of places sheds make the farm much more productive and so are a good investment
I agree, Like storing winter fodder, equipment, etc, sheds will increase there long term quality and life. of anything they store.
So while sheds are optional for sheep they have many benefits making them a worth while investment even if not for sheep’s use directly. But once you have one you will find it has many benefits including at lambing time.

At minimum you need 1 small shed too keep all your stuff in... it’s amazing how much stuff you need/ accumulate when you keep sheep... costs me £100 a month too rent a small shed then I’m lucky enough that I rent a bigger shed too lamb in for £500 a month for 2 months of the year

As other farmers on here have said if you are brave enough to consider starting in farming without considerable free capital then start with sheep, there are low set up costs & thankfully very few rules & regulations that will cost you money, As soon as you have cattle you run the risk of TB & all the additional money draining expenses that go with it. Dairying is a rich mans luxury these days as the set up costs, rules & regs are astronomical.
With sheep if you get fed up with it you can sell up & you are not left with expensive investments in machinery & buildings that you will never recoup your money on.
