Starter fertilizer

Looking to put liquid starter fertiliser on the osr and spring barley with the drill and was wondering what products and rates people were using, thank you.

Fundamentally you should only really need N or P via a starter. And even then if P reserves are decent then you should question that.

Anything that has to swing from the Manitou is going to be far better value than something that comes in a van. Do not get sucked into the high margin "starter" world or the microgranular world in my opinion.

Very often because my P sources come from FYM, unless the soil is short I'll use whatever N I have handy about - often Urea, sometimes AS or AN.

If it were solid, a nice soluble form would be DAP. 160 kg/ha gives you 30 kg of N and 74 kg of P (enough P for the entire crop).

I will be fitting a liquid kit to my next drill & it will use the same N+S liquid I use for foliar treatment for the only reason being simple logistics. I'd have a bit of P in it too if I had the spare tanks. I prefer to keep my soil P indices above 2 so the crop can get what it needs fairly quickly.

The liquid manufacturers use it so I don't see why not, though I'll pass this over to those who do melt their own. MAP is even more soluble though expensive and rare as rocking horse poo. @Andrew K @Clive

No it didn’t stay in solution when I tried (a long time ago now though)

Perhaps they use MAP instead.
