Starting Stopping a Motor from Arduino

I have 4kw electric motor which has a regular push button motor start stop on it.

I also have a 24V DC power supply in close proximity so I can use a relay to allow the arduino provide a 24V signal.

What type of contactor do I need to turn on off my motor with the 24V

You need a contactor that has motor contacts rated for the starting current of the motor, an overload that is rated for the motor full load current and a 24v DC coil. Years ago, I used to swap the contactor parts to get the combinations that I needed. I'm not sure how available the parts are today. I'd ask an trade electrical supplier.

I was running several contactors via 12v relays from a picaxe but the interference kept resetting the board. Tried a few half-arsed attempts to get rid of it, failed, and moved over to solid state relays instead. Not that they're faultless either (overheat and fail) or suitable for a motor (?).

No experience of arduino.

Current draw is the important bit here especially if you’re trying to control the motor. What is it you want to do. Just turn on? Or do you want to control it’s speed or direction.
Also have a look at the current draw requirement for your relay. Arduinos are not power modules and so they don’t output much current. You may need to put in a transistor between the arduino and the relay.

Sorry just see this and you may well ha e it completed. I would use a relay between the arduino and the contractor. I’d probably use a 240v ac coil In the contractor so arduino drives relay which drives the contactor which drives the motor. This keeps your high current circuit well away from your low voltage arduino.
