Our wheat all looks well apart from a couple of headlands which were hammered by pheasants from a neighbouring shoot. The only caveat was the presence of quite a few aphids being active on wheat in mid November. This necessitated getting the sprayer out ,once again, after it had been put to bed for the winter. We really are in a hotspot?

What width do you run your autosteer at for drilling?

Looks to overlap a bit. I run mine at 4m, but have quite a few rat runs where running wide. Yours looks better in my opinion.

Hence I won't be posting any pictures of our winter barley!
I run it a 3.98m so 4cm of overlap on a pass (I think 😂) I hate having missed bits 😳

Well seeing as it’s new year and last years thread on this topic ram to 80 pages, thought it time to start a new one for this year’s harvest.

I don’t have a lot of winter corn in but what I have is looking ok. The warm December certainly did no harm. A selection as off today.

Bit of an experiment. Skyfall drilled direct into a 3 year old grass / clover ley. Looked “interesting “ when the drill was in field but pleased with it now. Bit of clover hanging in but hopefully also feeding it

momento winter barley. Looking a little thin in places but it’s all there. Will need a feed sooner rather than later.

Photo 1. Not bad for a 3 am finish :)
Photo 2. Its all there as they say. Would be nice to keep the clover in, we have a field into grass.
Photo 3 and 4. Cant believe its washed, although its very light up there. Heavy rain the week following if I remember correctly. Rolling was a tricky call again, probably helped against slugs.
Something to go forwards with

Second wheat. And a field of late wheat. I've five fields of gleam wheat:

After fallow
Second wheat in long term cereals.
Second wheat after grass
First wheat after grass just disced up.
Late first wheat after ploughed up grass.

I'd say I'm pretty pleased with it, apart from the bottom headland using up a bag of year old seed. Think there will be a couple of acres there that yields nowt.
Have you considered putting your photos in the countryside calender competition?

The osr makes me nervous never had such big biomass at this time of year, we shall see better than no osr at current prices.
Interestingly I know someone doing trials. One field grazed down with sheep and one topped to see if it helps prevent the larvae causing problems .

Extase 1st wheat after OSR, sown 21st September. Straw is the winter ‘tide’ mark.

Grafton 1st wheat after OSR, sown a week earlier, 50 yards from 1st picture. A very different crop.

Amazing looking crops. The OSR here in particular a treat to look at. Chae's is very angry looking but not surprised if there has been a bit of stock about and it's virgin OSR ground.

Silverfox's crops look exactly as they always do. Every seed grows and stands tall and proud like soldiers on parade. Barley looks angry but cold weather might take the wind out of it's sails a snip yet but it will shrug that off.

One or two crops probably wanted a sniff higher seed rate but they will come on and have the same potential as the rest. Good sensible growing season would be nice.

Got 10t of fym in the seed bed this time and the difference is night and day. So anyone that says autumn applied fym doesn’t do anything is talking bollox!!!
