It’s been in blackgrass control mode so was wheat, spring oats, winter beans, winter wheat, spring barley (unplanned should have been second wheat) and now winter barley.
Was going to do osr next but think we will put chicken muck on and put winter wheat in again

Planet drilled 6/3 getting going now at 2 leaf, took nearly 3 weeks to emerge
I’m really chilled about the cold weather, the last few months cold have taken away Rust, Septoria and Bydv issues away in wheats, sorted Charlock in OSR and kept BG in the grasps of late residuals
Lodging risks are lowered, blw are slow to get going, I like the cold dry weather !! It’s not the most aesthetically pleasing but it’s good for the wallet and fieldwork is up to date
The only crop not enjoying it is the larvae stuffed OSR which could’ve done with an early warm spell, rest of the OSR is the best we’ve grown for 4 years so a properly frustrating mixed bag of a crop this year (again !! )

What kind of soil is that? It looks very good.
I haven't seen any barley emerged here yet, and all my planet is still in the bags.
Hope to get going next week, if all the rain, hail and snow(!) will stop and we don't have any more frost.

It’s a light loam over Chalk, about 800 ft above sea level
There’s been plenty of frosts and a little snow on this since it emerged, it’s been a cold but quite dry March and April with a dry 10 days ahead on the forecast so far...

We hammered the headland of a WW field last Autumn with the dual spreaders and tankers. Despite sub soiling , early fert and help from a leaking umbilical pipe it still looks poor.

Need to remind myself that the plough can't fix everything!

Thanks I am pleased with it, we have about 200ha. Early drilling just makes crops so so so much better on this soil and now I understand after the last few years why dad was so anti about all the late October drilling, which worked well for a couple of years in dry autumns but is most definitely not a long term tactic!

Your father is totally correct and I concurr with his comments.

Do you ever get a problem with bydv? I'm looking to push earlier but my main concern is virus getting it. We don't use insecticides and would like to stick with that.

Will these frosts affect rape in the same way with apple blossom, I haven’t seen an apple here for two years thanks to frost.

The osr plant will put up more buds to replace those lost to frost. It's better to lose a few early flowers than lose a lot to a later frost.

There must be a few vineyard owners getting nervous!

Winter wheat today getting growth reg been trying last couple week but weather not playing ball

We hadn’t used deter for a while before it was banned but I don’t know whether it was because everyone else was using it we didn’t get any. But there doesnt seem to be much this year , abit around margins. I did have lots of traps out and couldn’t catch many aphids.

What are people’s winter beans looking like? This is the first year I have grown them so not sure what to expect. I have got a good plant stand of healthy looking plants, they’re just very small and don’t seem to have grown in a month.
