All wheats had 80kgs N and Oats 40kgs, chalk land so need early N. Over the lot, pretty happy, few areas that are a bit heavier a bit thin because of water logging but all in ok. Heavy land to be drilled tomorrow onwards with Skyfall. 50kgs N in the spread today on the top.

That's impressive. You can see every heavy land crop round here after spring barley. They look gash. And fields of wheat where part was barley and part wheat the year before - the previously barley looks double gash.
Some wheat late direct disc drilled after spring barley quite poor on a new farm to me (only started a couple weeks ago) but it has perked up remarkably after getting nitrogen on as soon as we could.
situations like this, cereals crops after spring barley a small amount of nitrogen down the spout is most definitely legally justifiable IMO

I'll throw my autumn nitrogen hat in the ring and say chopped oat or barley straw wants a visit from Mr liquid N and his mate Mr flat fans in any situation. It's not going to leach or get in the water or anything.

Especially with direct drilling. More N gets into the water through lots of cults and mineralisation the putting a small amount down with seed in a zero till situation.

Have NIAB done any trials with autumn N either zero till or conventional
Not that I’ve seen. Ahdb did one and didn’t find a yield difference. It’s not something I think needs doing regularly but in extreme weather forced situations where many have been forced to crop winter cereals after spring barley I think it’s worthwhile. No different to chucking on chicken litter.

You didn’t have enough on there
How many to the ac

5? Think they were on here until mid December when it started raining. Mid Jan on the second field but that got a lot more pugged. ££££ wise we'd have been better pushing for another cut. But sheep keep the coursers off. Not my sheep - in just collect the £££.

No N here for a while, keeping an eye on the OSR and W Barley but don't think there's any rush everything is quite well tillered and holding up well. Might be different if I was using urea rather than liquid N
