I agree with you that bankers should have been jailed for their part in the crash but that's a small part of the bigger problem of cronyism and self-interest at the top of British (and most other global) politics. We've allowed our political class to pivot from one generally interested in trying to improve the country, even if their background meant their understanding of what that meant was flawed, to the current system where the ultimate aim is purely to serve their own ends and get away with it.

The Tories are no worse than Labour or the Libs on that front now, sadly.

and there seems to be a hereditary political class, who all espouse the doctrine of meritocracy, so by that argument, they have all got there by their own hard work and abilities (and their children will too), nothing to do with trans generational self serving nepotism! It also means they they can blame those who don't succeed for not working hard enough, not inbuilt unfairness in the system.
