My b&b livestock man looses about 20 lambs per year through theft, but last year he thought it would be nearer 50. He,like glasshouse, just accepts it as a business expense. At what point do you no longer accept the losers? When you break even?
He shouldn't have to accept any loses. The question is what can he do about it that wont cost him more than he's losing?

not necessarily so, When My tractor driver went to visit his sister in the states, I think it was Florida she explained they did not do breakfast and would have to go to the local whatever. She said to take the car, he was a bit shy of driving on the wrong side and said he would sooner walk, He was used to walking miles, She said you can't as there is no footpath, it would be Jaywalking and the police would pick him upo_O
Saw this the other day. Poor bugger was on holiday in the US visiting his son and went out for a walk. Didn't speak English so the cops beat the s**t out of him. The fact that someone actually called the police to say there was a man walking down the street is amazing to me.
I lived there for 3 years and soon learnt there's places you don't walk.

think it will be on the rise here always been some stock taken mostly odd one here or there but have heard of some big numbers taken cows out on grazing shear milkers selling a few and putting down as deaths
know one place in the back of nowhere 500 ewes taken when asked around some of the people said thought yer sold them passed some guys in yer yard and big stock truck there they even gave a smile and a wave as we drove past
stock fuel and tools will be on the rise alot of Utes getting stolen at moment as well

I can recall many moons ago my grandfather saying about sheep being killed and skin had to be left behind on the fence would of been back in the days pre meat export im guessing when sheep really only had a wool value so it's a very long time ago

You lot really don't know what theft is. No one here black or white can leave cattle out grazing at night because they'll be stolen often they'll be stolen from the stockyards at night so you have to have a guard. Whilst your cattle are tucked away at night then other people will be out grazing your grass I actually know someone who got shot and killed objecting to this and we've had dogs speared chasing cattle away. You've got to have a herdsman with your livestock to stop them being stolen when grazing but we''ve had a herdsman give cows away to his mate. We had a goatherd who when one gave birth would slaughter and eat another so that the numbers were always the same at the end of the day. So we gave up livestock as it was too stressful and went fully cropping but we can't grow maize because it gets stolen often by the people paid to guard it. This year we chopped about fifteen acres a month from harvest because if we had left it there would have been nothing left our security said it was warthogs obviously highly evolved warthogs who could pick it and carry it off in sacks. In some areas people will wait until your wheat is ready then come in with a donkey and cart and cut it before you can. A friend tipped his car over driving through a straw pile that was left by the combine only it wasn't just straw it was a tonne of corn covered by straw, his combine driver got over the hill out of sight opened the auger dumped a bit covered it with straw to be collected later. We hired a tipper truck that we had to fill with diesel. After a couple of days we worked out that its fuel consumption was about two gallons a mile because as soon as he left our yard he was into the village with a can and hosepipe. My landlords manager caught a tractor driver stealing diesel on making his escape the driver ran him over, a Fiat 180/90 is a heavy tractor we found out. Obviously this is trivial compared to the Dutch company that I sold broccoli to that went bankrupt owing us £80,000.

It is fun.it's been a learning experience it's just different. We don't lock our doors at night and leave keys in vehicles theft is at a lower level. One of my mechanics came home last week to find he'd been burgled. Everything was taken except his bed because they couldn't get it out the door but they took his clothes pots and pans even the light bulb.

But the white collar type get off with it.
Steal £50, go to jail
Steal £50 million, get a knighthood
You don't need to justify your affront to how society values morals to me, I did put "in an ideal world" in my post.
There is the old adage about blaming the parents, how society moves forward can only be due to how morals are instilled into our young.

Not sure that's the case these days, you need good reliable transportation, if you live and work in the city, that may mean public transport is the way but anything remotely rural I think you have to have a car or at least a motorbike.
As for the phone, its a struggle to manage without one, it probably costs you more not having one.
I agree there's a ton of money wasted on shite these days but a phone and car should be a good investment.
But, generally, living in a rural area is a choice. You can get a working smartphone for £50 new and on a £7 / month contract or PAYG.

I bet when the first tractors came out the grumpy old git farmers called them an unnecessary luxury too.

Please try to be accurate.

Theft of £50 won't get you jail time. Even after the 50th occurrence. Maybe 100 hours community service. As others have said, it's generally a single stupid offence they get caught for because they've done it so many times they get complacent but, challenged in court, ask for "35 other offence to be taken into account". These people are 1 man crime waves and terrorise their communities.

Sadly, you are often right on the white collar crime though. Slightly off on a tangent but I fail to see how Paula Vennels (CEO who oversaw the Post Office false prosecution of over 700 honest sub-postmasters for theft) is not serving jail time, let alone still serving on the board of public bodies

If you live and work in an area with good public transport then fair enough, hopefully your employer will be ok if you don't make it to work because the buses are on strike or the train cancels etc Not every workplace is within easy reach or accessible for shift work with public transport though.
As you say there's good deals for phones which is good as they are just about essential these days.
They really should teach basic budgeting at school.

Overeating and weight gain is largely stress related.
Some people have incredible stress to deal with living in poor housing paying high rents with dodgy neigjbours
I think weight gain is due to poor diet, too much sugar and carbs, all this exacerbated by all dietary advice being taken over by multinational food corporations, so we have lost our indigenous food culture, add to that the fact that the cheapest food is the ultra processed, high carb rubbish and a recipe for disaster. Then, high energy costs can put people off cooking, as they worry about fuel costs, why isn't slot meter electricity the cheapest, instead of the most expensive?
