I quite understand the sentiment, and would expect leniency at every level of the judiciary.
But advertising this is stupidity at an epic level.
It's encouraging folk, implying that it's not really much of a crime.....

I notice, on news reports about the cost of living, those interviewed lately seem to have been able to spend money on tattoos and hair jobs.....
And while i wouldn't see people in the UK hungry - principally cos they might come round to my house and nick summat- i do wander how much is down to skewed expectations.

People don't shoplift food "for the money" anyway the idea is preposterous.

How on earth would you shoplift enough food to make it worth selling it for a quick buck?

Shove 20 steaks down your trousers?

The supermarkets waste £millions in food every year.
Sorry mate your wrong...
Smack heads steal to sell it again.
1 in our area known as the meat man.
Ppl place orders with him.
Steals what they want and sells cheaper than shop.

not necessarily so, When My tractor driver went to visit his sister in the states, I think it was Florida she explained they did not do breakfast and would have to go to the local whatever. She said to take the car, he was a bit shy of driving on the wrong side and said he would sooner walk, He was used to walking miles, She said you can't as there is no footpath, it would be Jaywalking and the police would pick him upo_O
So their for a car is a luxury item , if i lived city center i wouldnt have a car .

I know, and it upsets me more than I can vocalise.
A pal had a few powertools lifted backalong, and his stockman soon recognised one or more on a local freeads site.

Plod was informed....'there it is, easy peasy...here's his number. 'sorry Sir, too stretched to deal with it'.

I can't easily come to terms with this.
If the State can't deal with such things, society is broken.
My pal is a gentleman, and a gentle man, and took it no further.

(Made emperor, I'd make the punishment pay for the enforcing)

A car chase over a box of nappies is overkill
There's always more to that story. Most likely a known drug addict, and "frequent flyer".

" "suspect" wanted for 2 counts of Manslaughter, Aggravated Obstruction of a Highway, 4 counts of Negligent Injury, Theft, and several traffic violations. The charges stem from a theft investigation that originated at Walmart on Louisville Avenue just before 6:30 p.m. on May 9, 2022, involving two suspects, "suspect's" vehicle, described as a silver Camaro, was seen heading south on 165 from Armand. An officer located the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle immediately fled at a high rate of speed for approximately one mile after noticing the police. Suspect drove on the shoulder of the road, ran the red light at 165 and Renwick, and ultimately crashed at the intersection of 165 and Renwick Street. As police pulled up and tended to the injured, including Suspect’s baby, Suspect fled the area on foot in a northern direction. Suspect also has active warrants for Theft of a Firearm, Possession of a firearm by a Felon, and traffic charges.

If you want to see how shoplifting works in the US, look at the videos out of California, and how little is done. That Camaro was followed only because they were given the plate number and found they had multiple serious arrest warrants for the owners. We don't have widespread cameras and tracking like you do, police generally only track down high level criminals, mid level criminals can easily evade capture until they run into police for something stupid.

The odd and even number house experiment doesn't bother me one bit, if they were careful with the study design. Attempted burglary could be a pry mark or broken lock, and not much to find. Using a forensics team randomly could be a good strategy for that sort of issue. I'd hope they are sending lower level "beat cops" to do the basics for all reports.

In other news holiday bookings surge and retail sales jump 1.4% in April boosted by sales of alcohol and tobacco.

"Whilst food spend has been largely unchanged, which suggests people are still being cautious, spend on alcohol and tobacco has soared," - Danni Hewson, financial analyst for AJ Bell

"2022 will be a good financial year. Capacity almost reaches pre-corona level of 2019." - Fritz Joussen, Tui

Seems most people aren't having a problem affording the 'essentials.'

I can see by the vapour trails jetting off on holiday is booming. A few weeks ago I noted that Airbus are expanding because they think there's going to be an air travel boom. Quite apart from the fact that this is completely wrong from a climate change point of view, how can folks afford all these holidays.........but not food ?. My own view is the majority of folks in this country have money to burn. A small minority are in poverty. A 2 tier nation of haves and have nots.

My upbringing taught me that theft is theft, no matter how small, it is wrong. I can say hand on heart that I 've not even walked off with a pen from the bank counter not even before they were chained down.
I do find it hard to come to terms with the idea that some crimes are not as bad as others, no I don't live in a fairy-tale bubble, I just have to keep my morals to myself and move on.
I feel for my boys and how they are going to deal with their feelings when they get to my age.
How do u feel about white collar theft?
Not stealing a loaf of bread, but stealing your house, defrauding you out of savings , shares or a business? Fred Goodwin lost billions of pounds of life savings in his dishonest dealings, yet walks off untouched

There were many people that should’ve gone to jail for their involvement in the run up to 2008. The fact that virtually no one did means that it’s all going to happen again.

On radio 4 this morning (I admit I was a bit sleepy) A government Minister said that with the food crisis, Police should not get involved if people were stealing food.

I would think the exact opposite, should come down really hard on people looting veg/potatoes from fields. Equally those rustling stock, stealing eggs, shop lifting etc. So that food can be distributed through the proper channels.

Whoever said it must retract or resign IMHO.
Bit like Johnson saying we must have a high wage society & then being completely surprised when the train unions go on strike, the 70's here we come again.

All the keywords are there, "theft", "stealing", "defrauding" it still is theft and as such is wrong. In the ideal world the punishments should fit the crimes. With theft the wrongdoers should have what they value taken away from them as punishment. Nothing to give? Then their freedom and give something back to society not just sit out a long holiday with free board and lodgings paid for by those who don't go around taking what isn't theirs.

But the white collar type get off with it.
Steal £50, go to jail
Steal £50 million, get a knighthood

Ball cocks , a car is a luxury item same as a phone .
Not sure that's the case these days, you need good reliable transportation, if you live and work in the city, that may mean public transport is the way but anything remotely rural I think you have to have a car or at least a motorbike.
As for the phone, its a struggle to manage without one, it probably costs you more not having one.
I agree there's a ton of money wasted on shite these days but a phone and car should be a good investment.
