Steel Buildings

Hi,

Looking at getting a steel building (STP) but getting very confused from the quotes.

Building required as vehicle storage and workshop so think this is classed as industrial (more than 2 hrs in it)rather than agricultural, located in Worcestershire. Got quoted on a slightly insulated version with 40mm walls / roof with skylights.

Had a few quotes but not sure about what is a good spec or not, some state tex screwed in parts, others say for quality must all bolted etc etc.

Seems that there are a lot of people wanting to supply but fewer that actually make the buildings so a lot must be peddling the same manufacturer product. Happy to pay on going forward for the plans for planning submission but some seem to want quite a lot for these what's reasonable?

Anyone known as good, manufacturer, company etc any good advice or tips on picking a good one.

Also base laying, i want a suitable base for a 13 x 14m build, mix and reinforcement to take 5.5 tonne. One quote so far for from a building company:
"a 200mm deep slab (concrete grade C28/35), with two layers of A252 mesh and 200mm of compacted crushed stone sub-base",
but its nearly as much as the building

Anyone any idea of the groundworks cost for the above slab spec, obviously the groundworks will involve extras, smooth finish, hardcore surround for construction etc etc but what would a reasonable slab cost be for the above spec?.

Any advice, tips, recommendations gladly accepted.

Many thanks

All frame components will be bolted together to construct the frame. The tek screws are used to attach the cladding to the cladding rails, and the roof sheets to the purlins. i.e. all will use tek screws and bolts.

When you say 5.5tonne - what footprint will this be over?

200mm slab seems overkill for a 5.5t machine to me, as does two layers of A252 mesh. That said, I'd probably opt for min 300mm sub-base. What ground are you building on?

I'd be expecting at least a £15-20k bill to dig out, supply stone and compact, supply and lay mesh and concrete. I'm sure some firms would quote double or triple that though!!

Hi, thanks for that info, didn't realise that the base would cost that much!!

It needs to take 5.5 tonne motorhome and depth needs to 6-7 inches to take two post car lift.

Needs an old hard standing broken up but its soil with clay below (I think)

Also they want two metre hardcore surround. Which will add even more

Beginning to sound like a very expensive idea

All steel framed buildings will be bolted on the frame and sheets will be tec screwed to the rails.

I wouldn't worry about people not making there own building, I don't make my own but I have two regular suppliers who I buy buildings off so I can get a good price

If you're not sure of the spec put the specs on here we'll soon tell you if it's right or not

Ground works do cost as much as a building sometimes more. The reason for your over spec in mesh could be a few things buy mainly I think it will be because you said the words twin post ramp so they'll have spec'd it up for that. Also because its industrial spec ot all gets spec'd up.

To make it cheaper does it need to be industrial spec?

Hi, thanks for the further suggestions.

Industrial spec as a workshop will have someone in it for more than a few hours

No longer a farm, hoping the replacement of a large Dutch barn and two chicken sheds with the building in a similar position will satisfy planners.

Many thanks

Hi Just joined the forum so not sure if you are sorted with your building now? If not we are a CE marked UK manufacturer based in Market Drayton. Happy to provide advise or a quote to just supply or erect to suit your needs. Regards
