Steel weight

I went to price some 10”x6” girders to extend a shed today and they want to know weight I want , I don’t know . What weight is normaly used in agg buildings it’s just a roof on legs 17’ eves shed think they gave me option of 21 31 47 iirc guy was particularly unhelpful as so many seem to be these days, so thought I’d ask here .

Yes that’s what he said but is their not a way of knowing what the weight of the existing steel is ? What’s the difference thickness ?

It’s only 40’ the rafters are a lot smaller

Measuring your existing girders it will give you your weight/metre.

What’s your dimensions of the building . Height span , bay width and what sides are enclosed

40 ‘ wide 17’ high 15 degree roof 20’ bays back wall ends enclosed front open , clad in box profile .

254X146X 31 uprights rafters 203X133X 25 89diameter chs eaves ties and bracing with 177/1.6 Zeds is what I would use depends a little on your elevation and location for wind loading

As said, the weight per metre can be worked out on your existing shed by measuring the thickness of the webs on the columns and rafters. But I bet forever Fendts spec won't be far off.
That said, our last two 12m wide, 5.4m high are on 305mm wide columns with 254 rafters.

Yes both columns and rafters up a size and the rafter end plates as well so about an extra 180 kg per frame based on 50 ft like for like in money terms not a lot extra at about £100 per frame and about £50 extra if it’s galvanised , My 45 ft span sheds at home have been done on 305 columns and 254 rafters not necessary but looks better The shed we are converting at the moment to residential is 10m wide x 3m to eaves luckily I did it on 254x146x37 columns as we had some surplus at the time , 13 years latter it’s worked in my favour now with building regs ,I never skimp on steel sizes or concrete thickness but convincing farmers can be another mater sometimes

Living 700ft off sea level on a hill in NE Scotland you definitely don't want to be skimping on steel sizes!!
The big snowfall we had near 10yrs ago showed up the guys who had skimped either in steel or manufacturing.
A step up in steel size isn't that much extra and gives piece of mind if there's 36" of frozen snow on it.
