Steers eye removed by vet

I had a 6 month old steer develop a protrusion from its left eye, tried to treat with pinkeye treatment, didnt look like pinkeye, got vet next day, patched it, rechecked next day and had to remove eye. Traumatic for me, the eye looked sore so im hoping the steer is happier its out. I have one other steer that has similar vut its a small pink protrusion that looks to be shrinking and his eye is not weeping or red, he seems fine so will monitor.

Not sure whats caused this in these two, i have been treating pinkeye.

We had one cut out last year, I thought it was fascinating, dad not so much! Steer carried on fine.
Itll be an ulceration in the eye which causes the pink protrusion some get better with treatment some dont. Injecting the eyelid seems to be most effective

Eye enucleation (removal) is tolerated incredibly well in all species. Better to whip it out now than have a beast in chronic pain and discomfort if in salvageable. They don’t look in the mirror and live happily with what they’ve got.

Animals seem to cope far better with any kind of removal/amputation than humans
He may be more wary of movements around the side its from but should be no bother once healed

had a hfr with an eye glazed right over, been grazing in the village, anyone asked us, we just said it had had a bad eye, so the vet removed it, and replaced with a glass one ! some I let on , some I just let them carry on.
sold same hfr 4/5 weeks ago, and made sure buyer knew, had a lot of fun over it, half wished he'd taken it out of the bunch !!

We had one born with a glaucoma, had the eye removed at 6 months, as it would have probably have developed ulcers due to the eyelid not covering it when blinking. Vet did a lovely job, all the muscles around the eye still work, we just make an allowance when moving her for her one-sided sight. She's a third calver now.

Well im happy to report "wan" coz he has wan eye, is doing well, he has healed up perfectly and seems to be happy as larry, hes a bit nervous in the yards but i can walk up to him no worries in the paddock.

He is 258kg, group avg is 265, it definately checked his growth for a while as he was a decent frame calf.

The other calf, 109, had a very simular protrusion out of eye but wasnt sore or weaping, that has almost completely healed, the protrusion is gone and just a small white dot left on eye.

Pic of both last week at drenching and multimin shot.

I am very happy about outcome.
