Does anyone have any wheat fields with Sterile Brome in. I'm looking to conduct a herbicide trial this spring and could do with a wheat field that has Brome in it.

I have been told that that particular weed is one of the symptoms of parking the plough in the nettles. (?)
Kind-of
Although deep ploughing can offer some control, the seeds need to left on the surface of the ground for about 4 weeks to complete ripening and reduce dormancy. But if left too long on the surface then you force dormancy. The trick is to get the seed fully ripe, then lightly cultivate to get germination, then destroy.

We had a issue with Brome last year and wild oats. Brome has been steadily getting worse and we have been actively trying to get on top of it this year.

It’s also down to winter wheat this year too and spring barley with some land yet to be worked if that helps?

I wouldn't say its a symptom of not ploughing but you can run into trouble with Brome if your not careful.

To get the best control it helps to understand the life cycle of it a little more and know when to hit it and you can get control of it.

Rotation is the key to dealing with brome. Grow something other than wheat (or barley)

Broadway Star does a good job in Wheat as does Pacifica. Think Avadex is considered helpful

A decent slug of liberator on a mid october drilled winter barley with a mixed with roundup pre em as late as you dare goes a long way for winter barley.

Spring barley best thing is to try to wait until April drilling and maybe mid march spray off.

And then in Spring beans don't miss an opportunity to use Propquizafop even if late May just to keep the brome bubbling under. Rape use Propquizafop and Kerb to stop if trying too hard.

There are options. I'd love to use Metribuzin pre em in Spring Cereals.

I got most into trouble with it by not using a robust enough pre em when I could

No need for any of that rigamrole in maize. Wait till you see all the brome emerged and smash it with full rate nicosulfuron, zapped, dead as a hammer.

Brome on my light land is the worst weed I have to deal with, and we direct drill which does not help always.

I have patches mid field but the headlands are the worst of it.

Where in the UK you looking for land for the trial?

PM me. I'm a long way from the East Midlands but have a field with bad sterile brome. It has had full rate Crystal and DFF pre em, that's all. It will get full rate Broadway Star with adjuvant and water conditioner in late March.
