Stiga mower engine problem

Hi,

got a petrol engined stiga park compact mower. Has briggs and Stratton petrol engine.

when started, the engine will conk out under any form of load - moving fwd or back, or engaging bed. It will start again straight away, will Rev to full rev, but does cough and splutters.

once it’s been running a while it is better, but not right, eventually the problem goes away once it’s been going 10 - 15 mins.

I’ve done the filters, flushed the tank and lines, but beyond that my knowledge of small petrol engines is non existent.

anyone have any pointers?

and I’m not cutting the grass today in the piddling rain, it’s just taken me until now to get to it.

If it's a twin pull each spark plug cap off in turn.
I've had a few twins with similar symptoms. Ticked over and revved fine but cut out under load. Turned out they were only running on one cylinder yet sounded sweet until they were under load

Mine was the same, was only on 1 cylinder, con rod had snapped, couldn't even tell it was on 1 until we stripped it

Think I’d better take another look for a 2nd spark plug! 🤦‍♂️

My Stiga is playing up, reluctant to crank past compression with a fully charged battery, won’t fire with jump leads. Apparently the B&S are a bit sensitive to large valve gaps. Reset them (c/o YouTube). New fuel filter, battery and plug on Monday.

Are these Stiga any good then?
Looking to buy a new mower now I've made the lawn bigger and choosing between a Stiga and a Mountfield, just a different colour really as they are both the same thing.

Yeah, mine wouldn’t fire today either, just wound and wound. Was reminded it broke down on its last lady driver outing.
